Saying Thank You: A Win-Win

Saying Thank You: A Win-Win

Saying Thank You: A Win-Win

Thank you. These are two simple words, but they can make a huge impact for someone. Huge! Many people take these words for granted. It seems like we thank people for things out of habit. When you sneeze, someone says, “God bless you,” and you say, “Thank you.” A server brings you more coffee, you say, “Thank you.” You may not even realize you’re saying it or what impact it has; you just do it. That’s okay! It is the courteous thing to do. You shouldn’t have to think about whether you should say ‘thank you’ to someone. It is a very good habit. When in doubt, say it! “Thank you!”

But have you thought about what those words really can do for someone else, or how they might affect you?

Here is what we found:

  • Saying thank you can increase enthusiasm – it’s hard to be in a bad mood when you are being thanked for doing something.
  • Saying thank you can make someone smile – who doesn’t like to be thanked for something? It is a small way of letting someone know you care, which should put a smile on their face! “It was another great day; thank you for all your efforts today!”
  • Saying thank you can increase your team’s productivity – if your team is enthusiastic, they will feel better about what they are doing. A side effect is increased positivity and it will show up in their results. Ergo, a win-win! “Thank you for another great idea!”
  • Saying thank you will make you feel good – finally, you are spreading a little happiness to someone else. That’s a good feeling, both for you and the person you are thanking.nustep, thank you
Don’t underestimate the power of saying thank you; it might make a world of difference to someone.

Every day we are thankful that we have created a fun, affordable and safe environment for our Members where they can feel like this is their home away from home. We want them to be as comfortable here as they are in their own home. In addition, we love to see our Members socializing, verbalizing, improvising, evangelizing, visualizing, exercising, having fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation. Most of all, we get to thank them.

  • Thank you for being here.
  • Thank you for your terrific smile.
  • Thank you for helping us clean up after lunch.
  • Thank you for exercising.
  • Thank you for folding the clothes.
  • Thank you for folding the brochures.
  • Thank you for trusting us.
  • Thank you for making me smile.
  • Thank you for letting us get to know you and your family.
  • The world is a truly a better place because of you. Thank you!

Especially as Thanksgiving approaches, we want to let you know that we are thankful for our Members and their families and caregivers, our partners, family, friends, and the NSC team for making this a great year at Naperville Senior Center. Most of all, the best is yet to come… THANK YOU!!

Call to action: pick up the phone right now – it’s never more than an arm’s length away – call a sister, brother, mother or lover and say, “Thank you!”

Come Visit: to learn more about how NSC can provide relief from what seems like overwhelming responsibilities for you, and a great social environment for your loved one, contact us at 630.857.3017. Thank our Veterans on Veterans Day

Thank our Veterans on Veterans Day

Thank our Veterans on Veterans Day

lessons, Veterans DayRemembering our veterans and thanking them for their service is something we should do every day, not just on Veterans Day. But Veterans Day give us the opportunity to reach out to the veterans we know. I am reminded of the World War II stories my dad would tell me when I was younger. Dad joined the Navy at the age of 18 in November 1942, and served from July 1943 to January 1946. He was in the US Navy, stationed on the USS Philadelphia in the Atlantic. This was one of two ships that supplied firepower to cover Allied landings at Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, and the south of France.

One harrowing story I remember had to do with a stormy night when he was on deck. The winds were whipping and the sea was in turmoil. Luckily my dad saw a huge wave coming over the side of the ship before it hit the deck. He had the chance to grab a cable and hang on for dear life. He was literally sideways as the wind and water tried to pull him away! But luckily for us, he hung on tight and has had another seven decades with us.

Most of us knows a veteran. It might be a family member, relative, friend or neighbor. If you know one who was involved with World War II or another foreign conflict, here are 3 things you can do to capture their stories while they are alive:

  • veteran-364380_300Listen. Some vets love to tell stories from their time in the military. Others do not. If they are willing to talk about their time in the service, listen to and document their stories. You may need to ask a few leading questions. Where did you serve? What were the conditions like? What do you remember most about your time there?
  • Jog their memory. There may be some vets who want to talk about their time in the service, but their memory isn’t what it used to be. If that happens, take out any memorabilia they may have from that time. Those items may bring back memories that they forgot. Then listen and document.
  • Create something lasting. Take these stories and create a short book of them that you can give to other family members or close friends. If you captured the stories on a cell phone or video camera, you could combine them and create a nice video compilation. Even if other relatives have heard these stories over the years, it would be nice for them to have this memento they can go back to after your loved one passes away.

Our country continues to be a free because of these veterans’ dedication to this land.

Especially on this Veterans Day, make sure you thank every veteran you come across for their service and remember those vets who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

At Naperville Senior Center, we are honored to have several veterans in our midst. We thank them all for their service! Our country is free because of the brave. We love to hear the stories they tell, whether it is Veterans Day or any day of the year!

If they are not telling stories, our Members have plenty of opportunity to socialize, colorize, harmonize, hypothesize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, exercise, have fun, and plenty of activities providing mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.

3 Ways to Prevent Your Loved One from Falling

3 Ways to Prevent Your Loved One from Falling

3 Ways to Prevent Your Loved One from Falling

Fall Prevention Awareness Day is also the first day of fall. Coincidence? I think not!

In most cases, fall prevention is possible. Lets do everything we can to keep seniors safe and keep

More than one in four people over 65 will fall each year! With more than 50 million seniors living in the United States, that means over 12 million seniors will fall this year. According to the CDC, more than half of those seniors will not tell anyone they fell. With that said, 25 percent of older adults who fall will be treated in the emergency room. With medical costs continuing to rise, we need to do all we can to keep our loved one safe and educate caregivers on fall prevention measures.  Together we can help reduce the amount of injuries to seniors, especially ones that are preventable.

Here are 3 falls prevention tips:

fall preventionTalk to Their Doctor or Pharmacist: Understand if the combination of medications they are on might cause them to be unsteady on their feet. If so, see what they can do to alter the medications so your loved ones are not as off-balance.

Home Hazards: Do your loved ones have throw-rugs or clutter in walkways? Those items should be removed and the home should be clutter-free. Although throw rugs may be a “favorite gift” from someone or even help to keep your feet warm on a cold surface, they are easy to trip over and can create a fall. Toss all throw-rugs (or hang them on a wall). Go fall preventionthrough the house and make sure living areas are clutter-free. Keep what is important and store it so it is out of the way. Instead of throw rugs throughout their house, make sure your loved ones have house shoes (or regular shoes that they wear in the house) with non-skid soles so their feet stay warm and safe, so they can get around more easily.

Fall prevention

Install Hand Rails: At least one handrail should be installed in long hallways and in the shower to make sure the home is as safe as possible. There should already be handrails going up and down stairs. This will provide more support for your loved ones as they walk back and forth in their house. If they feel off-balance, it is easy for them to grab the railing to steady themselves.

This is their home away from home.

Our Members are provided with a fun, SAFE environment so they feel like this is their home away from home. We maintain a clutter free environment as they move around our facility and there is always someone available if they need help. We want them to be more comfortable and safe here, even more than they are in their own home!

To learn more about how Naperville Senior Center can provide you some respite and a great social environment for your loved one, contact us at 630.857.3017. You can also schedule a tour to see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

3 Tips to Keep Your Loved One Cool in the Summer

3 Tips to Keep Your Loved One Cool in the Summer

3 Tips to Keep Your Loved One Cool in the Summer

Tips to Keep Cool in Summer

Although summer started out cool, it has heated up fast! The heat index has already exceeded 100 this summer and this weekend is going to be hot as well. The high heat and humidity can cause the added risk overheating and possibly heat exhaustion or heat stroke. It is so important, especially this time of the year, to check on the elderly on a regular basis. Make sure they have power, their air conditioning is working, and they are doing okay.

Before the temps heat up, there are things you can do to help your loved ones get through the hot summer days without any problems.

Here are 3 tips to keep your loved ones cool this summer:
  • Eat Better. When we eat heavy, greasy foods, we feel sluggish and tired. Since the heat can already make us feel that way, avoid fatty foods in favor of something light and lean. With the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables on sale this time of the year, load up your loved one’s refrigerator with their favorite cut up fruits and veggies so they have easy snacks ready to go. Activity: when the heat index returns to normal, take your loved one to the Farmer’s Market or out to a farm stand and let them pick their own fruits and veggies.
  • Stay Hydrated. The old rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water. Sometimes that is hard to do, especially for older adults. But you can still stay hydrated by eating fruits and veggies that have high water content. Here are a few that have over 90 percent water: watermelon; cantaloupe; strawberries; tomatoes; spinach; cucumbers; and baby carrots. These are all foods that you can have in your loved one’s refrigerator ready-to-eat! Activity: get some seeds and grown your own cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce.
  • Stay indoors. When the temperature is extreme – heat or cold – it is important for older adults to stay inside where the temperature is controlled. They should avoid being out in the heat, and especially in the sun, during these hot, humid days. That will also help them stay hydrated. Activity: play bunco, a crossword puzzle or listen to their favorite music.

HydratedHow do we help our members?

We have our own garden at Naperville Senior Center where our Members help to plant, water, pick and eat the wonderful vegetables we grow. We plant seeds early in the year and hope to enjoy the harvest throughout the summer! Although we keep our Members active, we make sure they stay hydrated and have ‘down time’ when they need it.

When they are not gardening, our Members socialize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, visualize, exercise, have fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: for more ways to beat the heat contact us at 630.857.3017. You can also schedule a tour to see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

3 Life Lessons I (Hope I) Taught My Kids

3 Life Lessons I (Hope I) Taught My Kids

3 Life Lessons I (Hope I) Taught My Kids

By Mike Cooper

Naperville Senior Center / A Nurturing Senior Community

As a parent, you hope you can impart some valuable wisdom to your children, or at least a few good lessons along the way, to help them grow into dependable, mature adults. Sometimes you feel like all of your words or actions are falling on deaf ears; other times you see the spark that makes it all worthwhile.

Just as my dad taught me some valuable life lessons growing up, I, too, have shared some with my children.

Here are the top 3 (from my point of view):

  1. life-lessonsThe Value of Money. Wouldn’t it be great if money really did grow on trees? Well, it doesn’t. It is important to make sure that kids understand how to care for the things they have so they last, as well as the cost associated with having those things in the first place. We had no ‘silver spoons’ in our family; our children were shown, by example, how to save and when it was okay to spend. (If only our politicians had learned that lesson!)  Senior Community
  2. Be Responsible. This is easy – if you say you are going to do something, do it. It really doesn’t get any easier than that.
  3. help-life-lessons-1265227_300Make Good Choices. We have tried to instill a little bit of the Holy Spirit into our children through our actions and words. It seems too easy to see someone else’s ‘bad’ choices with social media giving you 24/7 access to pictures that shouldn’t have been posted in the first place. We hope that our kids will make the right choices to start, so not to have the ‘wrong’ pictures at all.

From generation to generation, parents want to impart wisdom to their children that they learned through their own mistakes. Sometimes it works; other times you simply have to let your kids make their own mistakes so they can learn from them. It will give them their own ‘words of wisdom’ that they will want to share with their own kids someday.

We love hearing these types of stories from our Members at NSC as they socialize with each other. Remembering the past is a great way to keep our memories sharp. We also work on their minds and spirits through socializing, harmonizing, improvising, and just plain having fun! Come on in and see what our senior community has to offer for you or your aging loved one.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.

Honoring Lost Lives On This Wonderful Memorial Day

Honoring Lost Lives On This Wonderful Memorial Day

Honoring Lost Lives On This Wonderful Memorial Day

Memorial day-Mike Playing Taps-300wMemorial Day was originally referred to as Decoration Day. It came about in the years following the Civil War as a way to remember those who lost their lives in battle. The first Decoration Day took place in May of 1868. It wasn’t until 1971 that Memorial Day became a federal holiday, taking place on the last Monday in May, to honor the men and women who died while serving in the military.

Everyone at Naperville Senior Center would like to thank all of the brave soldiers, and their families, who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country free. But we also want to remember and thank all of the veterans who made it home safely, as well as those soldiers currently serving in the military who may find themselves in harm’s way, and their families. Their sacrifices to this country are no less important.

At Naperville Senior Center, we have several veterans in our midst. Some of our Members’ husbands are also veterans. In fact, both Pam and Mike’s dads were also in the Navy. Wow!

memorial-Day-20151109_102559_300wAccording to the Veteran’s Administration, there are only about 3% of the World War II veterans still living with approximately 348 dying every day. At this rate, all of the World War II vets will be gone in less than 5 years. As the phrase has been coined, this is the Greatest Generation, and there is so much we can learn from them and the soldiers that came after them.

If you get the opportunity, thank a veteran, young or old, for their service. Ask them if they would tell you a little something about their time in the military. (Some vets may not want to talk about it.) You may learn a little something about history that you cannot find in a book. If you go to a cemetery to honor your own loved one(s) and you see a military headstone, take a moment to say a prayer or just have a moment of silence in remembrance of that soldier.

At Naperville Senior Center we are honored to have veterans as Members and family. We love to hear the stories they tell. If they are not telling stories, our Members have plenty of opportunity to socialize, colorize, harmonize, hypothesize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, exercise, have fun, and plenty of activities providing mental and physical stimulation.
