Honoring Lost Lives On This Wonderful Memorial Day

Honoring Lost Lives On This Wonderful Memorial Day

Memorial day-Mike Playing Taps-300wMemorial Day was originally referred to as Decoration Day. It came about in the years following the Civil War as a way to remember those who lost their lives in battle. The first Decoration Day took place in May of 1868. It wasn’t until 1971 that Memorial Day became a federal holiday, taking place on the last Monday in May, to honor the men and women who died while serving in the military.

Everyone at Naperville Senior Center would like to thank all of the brave soldiers, and their families, who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country free. But we also want to remember and thank all of the veterans who made it home safely, as well as those soldiers currently serving in the military who may find themselves in harm’s way, and their families. Their sacrifices to this country are no less important.

At Naperville Senior Center, we have several veterans in our midst. Some of our Members’ husbands are also veterans. In fact, both Pam and Mike’s dads were also in the Navy. Wow!

memorial-Day-20151109_102559_300wAccording to the Veteran’s Administration, there are only about 3% of the World War II veterans still living with approximately 348 dying every day. At this rate, all of the World War II vets will be gone in less than 5 years. As the phrase has been coined, this is the Greatest Generation, and there is so much we can learn from them and the soldiers that came after them.

If you get the opportunity, thank a veteran, young or old, for their service. Ask them if they would tell you a little something about their time in the military. (Some vets may not want to talk about it.) You may learn a little something about history that you cannot find in a book. If you go to a cemetery to honor your own loved one(s) and you see a military headstone, take a moment to say a prayer or just have a moment of silence in remembrance of that soldier.

At Naperville Senior Center we are honored to have veterans as Members and family. We love to hear the stories they tell. If they are not telling stories, our Members have plenty of opportunity to socialize, colorize, harmonize, hypothesize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, exercise, have fun, and plenty of activities providing mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.

Moms Should Be Celebrated All Year Long

Moms Should Be Celebrated All Year Long

Moms Should Be Celebrated All Year Long

Mother’s Day / Moms should be Celebrated all year long

Now that the calendar has flipped to May, it’s time to think about Mother’s Day. Lines at the florists and grocery stores will get longer, with people buying flowers, candy, cards and other mementos to give their mothers. But why do we only recognize and celebrate mom one day of the year? For all they do, mothers should be celebrated all year long! Moms don’t get ‘days off’ when they are sick, their job is 24/7, and many times they don’t get the recognition they deserve.

Although Mother’s Day is the official day to celebrate all the moms, grandmas, aunts, and other women who are role models, here are 3 things you can do on this day or any other day to say ‘thank you’ to your mother:

  • dependent-441408_640Help your mom with projects around her house. Does your mom need a room painted, a carpet cleaned or a banister tightened? If you are capable, help her fix things that are broken or just in need of repair. If her house is in better condition, she will feel better. And you will have some time together with her in the process.
  • Listen to stories. Find an old photo album and go through it with her. Let her tell the stories behind the pictures, even if you have heard them before. Maybe you will learn something new from her stories!
  • Take her for a pedicure, manicure or facial. What lady doesn’t want to get a little glammed up once-in-a-while? Even if it is just for a manicure at a local salon, your mom will feel pampered for a little while. This doesn’t have to be a once-a-year event; take your mom periodically ‘just because.’

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms!

I want to take this time to wish Pam a very happy Mother’s Day. Zak and Emily couldn’t have a better mom, friend and role model than Pam; I am grateful for all she has done for this family every day!

We treat all of our female Members like they were our moms! When we hear them say they look forward to coming each day, we know we are doing our best. Each week there is something new, different and interesting for them to do or learn; we want our Members to grow through socialization, improvisation, visualization, exercise, and simple fun to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

Celebrate Mom!

Wishing all moms a very Happy Mother’s Day.

5 Easter Traditions from Around the World

5 Easter Traditions from Around the World

5 Easter Traditions from Around the World

By Mike Cooper

As we celebrate Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter, we want to share 5 Easter traditions from around the world. Some of these are similar to things we do here in the U.S.; others are very unusual!

easter-707703_640When the kids were little in the Cooper household, we would hide the little plastic eggs filled with candy, goldfish, other treats and coins. The kids would start at the top of the stairs and Mike would video them as they ran down the steps to the room with the eggs. It was very fun watching their search tactics change as they grew older. However, we would only let them have a couple pieces of candy before Mass. There was no room for kids with too much sugar during the celebration of the Risen Lord!

What traditions do you have in your family or culture?

Here are 5 Easter Traditions from Around the World:

  1. SWEDEN: Easter is a very secular holiday in Sweden, celebrated with meals of eggs, herring, and something called ‘Jansson’s Temptation,’ which is made up of potato, onion and pickled sardines baked in a cream sauce. In the days leading up to Easter Sunday, children dress up as Easter witches while wearing old or used clothes. They go home to home in their neighborhoods, trading paintings or drawings for candy and treats – kind of like our Halloween, but there’s a trade for the candy!
  2. HAITI: In Haiti, Holy Week is celebrated with beautiful parades and traditional music played on bamboo trumpets, maracas, drums…even coffee cans if that is all they can find. The holiday is a little mixture of both Catholic and Voodoo traditions!
  3. ETHIOPIA: In Ethiopia, the first Easter service usually starts at 8 pm on Easter Saturday (similar to our Easter Vigil), but it lasts until 3 am Easter morning! Those who go to this service stay for the whole Mass and wear their Easter finest. After the service, people go home and have breakfast to celebrate with sourdough bread, which is traditionally cut by a priest or the head man of the family.
  4. lorca-711611_640SPAIN: There are many processions through the streets of towns in Spain at night to celebrate Easter. The ‘floats’ have decorated figures, covered in gold, silver or beautiful cloth, telling the Easter story. These floats are carried by 40 or 50 people through the procession, which can last 4 – 5 hours.
  5. UNITED KINGDOM: On a Sunday in the middle of Lent, the U.K. has a day called ‘Mothering Sunday,’ similar to our Mother’s Day. There are special church services and flowers are given to mothers to thank them for all they do.

Easter Celebration at NSC

This year we celebrated Easter early with our Members and the children from Bright Horizons for a fun multigenerational, multidenominational Easter activity. Everyone had a great time! Our Members also made spring wreaths this week, a symbol of renewal and rebirth.

When we are not celebrating, we encourage our Members to socialize, exercise, play games and puzzles, sing, clap, dance, spend time on the computer, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Are Frozen Foods Good For You?

Are Frozen Foods Good For You?

Are Frozen Foods Good For You?

frozen foods, healthy foodsDo you eat as many vegetables in the winter as you do in the summer? Fresh vegetables tend to cost more when they are out of season – and a lot of them are out of season this time of the year. With winter upon us, we ask the question, “Are frozen foods good for you?” Specifically, are frozen vegetables good for you? There are many opinions about different types of vegetables, such as organic fresh, regular fresh, canned, frozen, etc. How do you know what to choose?

Here are some helpful tips about different types of vegetables:

  • Canned: The least nutritious of all veggies. They tend to lose a lot of nutrients during the preservation process before being canned. If you can stay away from canned vegetables, you’ll be better off.
  • Fresh (whether organic or not): Get fresh vegetables if they are in season. But unless they are locally sourced, they are probably picked before they are ripe since they have to travel days or more to their final destination. This produce will not have their full nutritional value, even if they look ripe on the outside.
  • Frozen: Frozen vegetables are usually picked at their ripeness, and quickly blanched to remove bacteria. Then they are flash-frozen to lock in that freshness. This produce has the most nutrient-rich vitamins and minerals. Keep in mind that the longer they sit in the freezer, the more those nutrients will begin to break down. So don’t let them sit forever! Be leery of frozen vegetables in sauces that can add a lot of fat and calories. Look for the plain frozen vegetables.

Make sure your loved ones get the nutrients they need

It is important to get in as many fruits and vegetables as you can each day (the guideline is 9 servings!). Whether fresh or frozen, you are getting the nutrients your body needs. If the produce you are looking for is not in season, you know it is coming from far away, or you just want the convenience, consider getting frozen. You’ll be happy you did.

We provide nutritious AND delicious meals for our members

Naperville Senior Center provides a hot, noontime meal and snacks for each of our Members. Our veggies, biscuits and ice cream arrive frozen. Our entrées arrive frozen and fully cooked. We heat them up in our convection oven and Members rave about the deliciousness of everything including pot roast, baked cod, chicken Kiev, meat loaf, chicken dumplings and more.

Dessert time is very popular with our Members. There are fruit cups, cookies and fresh fruit, but the frozen treats are preferred. In addition to great food, we encourage our Members to socialize, exercise, play games and puzzles, sing, clap, dance, spend time on the computer, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

3 Ways to Show Your Appreciation to Senior Citizens

3 Ways to Show Your Appreciation to Senior Citizens

3 Ways to Show Your Appreciation to Senior Citizens

Olympic-Games-senior-citizensIn 2015 there were 47.8 million senior citizens (65 and above) living in the United States.

That is about 15 percent of the population. By 2050 that number is expected to be close to 90 million people over 65 years old – and that is just in the United States! In Naperville, 19% of the population is 65 and above. In just a few years, there will be 20,000 senior citizens in our town. We wanted to take the time to write a few words about ways we can show our appreciation for the senior citizens in our lives.

Knowing this, there will be even more need for senior services as baby boomers age, their children get older, and we all live longer than ever. Boom. Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services is in prime position of being ready to serve an ever-growing number of seniors who cannot safely stay at home. Like I always say, “I am looking forward to becoming my own Member!”

Since World Kindness Day was just yesterday, November 13th, we want to suggest three ways you can show your appreciation to senior loved ones, friends and neighbors

  • Help with cutting the grass, landscaping or shoveling snow. Is there a senior neighbor on your block that uses an old push mower? Or does their grass always seem to be high? Why not take your mower down there and cut it for them. Do the landscape beds need to be weeded or bushes trimmed? Lend a hand and do it for them. When you see snow pile up on their stoop, walkway or driveway, shovel it for them. Ask a neighbor or two to join you and get the job done even faster. It’s only an hour or two out of your day and your senior neighbor will be very grateful.
  • Say ‘Thank You.’ Did a senior citizen you know serve in World War II, or the Korean or Vietnam wars? Did they teach, volunteercelebrating-pink-senior-citizens, raise kids or do something to make the community a better place? Why not say ‘thank you’ to them, just to make them feel like they are still appreciated. Bring a pretty bunch of flowers to brighten their day. Or make a hot meal for them. ‘Thank you’ is so easy to say and it costs very little. Try it out, you might just feel good too!
  • Listen to their stories. Is there an old guy always at the barber shop when you go telling a story from days gone by? Or a woman at church that remembers the good old days? Take the time to listen to them and ask more questions. For these seniors, their stories may be the most important things to them. It helps them stay connected to the ones they love who may have already passed away. Some senior citizens may have difficulty remembering current things, but they have vivid recollection of what happened in the past. So instead of dismissing these stories as irrelevant to you, buy them a cup of coffee and a donut, and ask them to tell you a story!

We love listening to the stories our Members tell us, and I find that listening to stories makes me feel even more appreciation. We have learned so much from them! One Member was a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer. Another was a groundskeeper at Wrigley Field for over 30 years. When Members are not story-telling, they spend time socializing, verbalizing, improvising, evangelizing, visualizing, exercising, having fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: to learn more about how NSC can provide a respite for you and a great social environment for your loved one, contact us at 630.857.3017. You can also schedule a tour to see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

One final thought: you do not have to be at someone’s wake to mention, “The world is a better place because of your parent!”

Show Senior Citizens your appreciation.  You’ll be glad you did.
