3 Tips to Keep Your Loved One Cool in the Summer

Tips to Keep Cool in Summer

Although summer started out cool, it has heated up fast! The heat index has already exceeded 100 this summer and this weekend is going to be hot as well. The high heat and humidity can cause the added risk overheating and possibly heat exhaustion or heat stroke. It is so important, especially this time of the year, to check on the elderly on a regular basis. Make sure they have power, their air conditioning is working, and they are doing okay.

Before the temps heat up, there are things you can do to help your loved ones get through the hot summer days without any problems.

Here are 3 tips to keep your loved ones cool this summer:
  • Eat Better. When we eat heavy, greasy foods, we feel sluggish and tired. Since the heat can already make us feel that way, avoid fatty foods in favor of something light and lean. With the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables on sale this time of the year, load up your loved one’s refrigerator with their favorite cut up fruits and veggies so they have easy snacks ready to go. Activity: when the heat index returns to normal, take your loved one to the Farmer’s Market or out to a farm stand and let them pick their own fruits and veggies.
  • Stay Hydrated. The old rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water. Sometimes that is hard to do, especially for older adults. But you can still stay hydrated by eating fruits and veggies that have high water content. Here are a few that have over 90 percent water: watermelon; cantaloupe; strawberries; tomatoes; spinach; cucumbers; and baby carrots. These are all foods that you can have in your loved one’s refrigerator ready-to-eat! Activity: get some seeds and grown your own cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce.
  • Stay indoors. When the temperature is extreme – heat or cold – it is important for older adults to stay inside where the temperature is controlled. They should avoid being out in the heat, and especially in the sun, during these hot, humid days. That will also help them stay hydrated. Activity: play bunco, a crossword puzzle or listen to their favorite music.

HydratedHow do we help our members?

We have our own garden at Naperville Senior Center where our Members help to plant, water, pick and eat the wonderful vegetables we grow. We plant seeds early in the year and hope to enjoy the harvest throughout the summer! Although we keep our Members active, we make sure they stay hydrated and have ‘down time’ when they need it.

When they are not gardening, our Members socialize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, visualize, exercise, have fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: for more ways to beat the heat contact us at 630.857.3017. You can also schedule a tour to see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

3 Life Lessons I (Hope I) Taught My Kids

3 Life Lessons I (Hope I) Taught My Kids

3 Life Lessons I (Hope I) Taught My Kids

By Mike Cooper

Naperville Senior Center / A Nurturing Senior Community

As a parent, you hope you can impart some valuable wisdom to your children, or at least a few good lessons along the way, to help them grow into dependable, mature adults. Sometimes you feel like all of your words or actions are falling on deaf ears; other times you see the spark that makes it all worthwhile.

Just as my dad taught me some valuable life lessons growing up, I, too, have shared some with my children.

Here are the top 3 (from my point of view):

  1. life-lessonsThe Value of Money. Wouldn’t it be great if money really did grow on trees? Well, it doesn’t. It is important to make sure that kids understand how to care for the things they have so they last, as well as the cost associated with having those things in the first place. We had no ‘silver spoons’ in our family; our children were shown, by example, how to save and when it was okay to spend. (If only our politicians had learned that lesson!)  Senior Community
  2. Be Responsible. This is easy – if you say you are going to do something, do it. It really doesn’t get any easier than that.
  3. help-life-lessons-1265227_300Make Good Choices. We have tried to instill a little bit of the Holy Spirit into our children through our actions and words. It seems too easy to see someone else’s ‘bad’ choices with social media giving you 24/7 access to pictures that shouldn’t have been posted in the first place. We hope that our kids will make the right choices to start, so not to have the ‘wrong’ pictures at all.

From generation to generation, parents want to impart wisdom to their children that they learned through their own mistakes. Sometimes it works; other times you simply have to let your kids make their own mistakes so they can learn from them. It will give them their own ‘words of wisdom’ that they will want to share with their own kids someday.

We love hearing these types of stories from our Members at NSC as they socialize with each other. Remembering the past is a great way to keep our memories sharp. We also work on their minds and spirits through socializing, harmonizing, improvising, and just plain having fun! Come on in and see what our senior community has to offer for you or your aging loved one.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.

Honoring Lost Lives On This Wonderful Memorial Day

Honoring Lost Lives On This Wonderful Memorial Day

Honoring Lost Lives On This Wonderful Memorial Day

Memorial day-Mike Playing Taps-300wMemorial Day was originally referred to as Decoration Day. It came about in the years following the Civil War as a way to remember those who lost their lives in battle. The first Decoration Day took place in May of 1868. It wasn’t until 1971 that Memorial Day became a federal holiday, taking place on the last Monday in May, to honor the men and women who died while serving in the military.

Everyone at Naperville Senior Center would like to thank all of the brave soldiers, and their families, who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country free. But we also want to remember and thank all of the veterans who made it home safely, as well as those soldiers currently serving in the military who may find themselves in harm’s way, and their families. Their sacrifices to this country are no less important.

At Naperville Senior Center, we have several veterans in our midst. Some of our Members’ husbands are also veterans. In fact, both Pam and Mike’s dads were also in the Navy. Wow!

memorial-Day-20151109_102559_300wAccording to the Veteran’s Administration, there are only about 3% of the World War II veterans still living with approximately 348 dying every day. At this rate, all of the World War II vets will be gone in less than 5 years. As the phrase has been coined, this is the Greatest Generation, and there is so much we can learn from them and the soldiers that came after them.

If you get the opportunity, thank a veteran, young or old, for their service. Ask them if they would tell you a little something about their time in the military. (Some vets may not want to talk about it.) You may learn a little something about history that you cannot find in a book. If you go to a cemetery to honor your own loved one(s) and you see a military headstone, take a moment to say a prayer or just have a moment of silence in remembrance of that soldier.

At Naperville Senior Center we are honored to have veterans as Members and family. We love to hear the stories they tell. If they are not telling stories, our Members have plenty of opportunity to socialize, colorize, harmonize, hypothesize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, exercise, have fun, and plenty of activities providing mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.

Moms Should Be Celebrated All Year Long

Moms Should Be Celebrated All Year Long

Moms Should Be Celebrated All Year Long

Mother’s Day / Moms should be Celebrated all year long

Now that the calendar has flipped to May, it’s time to think about Mother’s Day. Lines at the florists and grocery stores will get longer, with people buying flowers, candy, cards and other mementos to give their mothers. But why do we only recognize and celebrate mom one day of the year? For all they do, mothers should be celebrated all year long! Moms don’t get ‘days off’ when they are sick, their job is 24/7, and many times they don’t get the recognition they deserve.

Although Mother’s Day is the official day to celebrate all the moms, grandmas, aunts, and other women who are role models, here are 3 things you can do on this day or any other day to say ‘thank you’ to your mother:

  • dependent-441408_640Help your mom with projects around her house. Does your mom need a room painted, a carpet cleaned or a banister tightened? If you are capable, help her fix things that are broken or just in need of repair. If her house is in better condition, she will feel better. And you will have some time together with her in the process.
  • Listen to stories. Find an old photo album and go through it with her. Let her tell the stories behind the pictures, even if you have heard them before. Maybe you will learn something new from her stories!
  • Take her for a pedicure, manicure or facial. What lady doesn’t want to get a little glammed up once-in-a-while? Even if it is just for a manicure at a local salon, your mom will feel pampered for a little while. This doesn’t have to be a once-a-year event; take your mom periodically ‘just because.’

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms!

I want to take this time to wish Pam a very happy Mother’s Day. Zak and Emily couldn’t have a better mom, friend and role model than Pam; I am grateful for all she has done for this family every day!

We treat all of our female Members like they were our moms! When we hear them say they look forward to coming each day, we know we are doing our best. Each week there is something new, different and interesting for them to do or learn; we want our Members to grow through socialization, improvisation, visualization, exercise, and simple fun to provide mental and physical stimulation.

5 Easter Traditions from Around the World

5 Easter Traditions from Around the World

5 Easter Traditions from Around the World

By Mike Cooper

As we celebrate Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter, we want to share 5 Easter traditions from around the world. Some of these are similar to things we do here in the U.S.; others are very unusual!

easter-707703_640When the kids were little in the Cooper household, we would hide the little plastic eggs filled with candy, goldfish, other treats and coins. The kids would start at the top of the stairs and Mike would video them as they ran down the steps to the room with the eggs. It was very fun watching their search tactics change as they grew older. However, we would only let them have a couple pieces of candy before Mass. There was no room for kids with too much sugar during the celebration of the Risen Lord!

What traditions do you have in your family or culture?

Here are 5 Easter Traditions from Around the World:

  1. SWEDEN: Easter is a very secular holiday in Sweden, celebrated with meals of eggs, herring, and something called ‘Jansson’s Temptation,’ which is made up of potato, onion and pickled sardines baked in a cream sauce. In the days leading up to Easter Sunday, children dress up as Easter witches while wearing old or used clothes. They go home to home in their neighborhoods, trading paintings or drawings for candy and treats – kind of like our Halloween, but there’s a trade for the candy!
  2. HAITI: In Haiti, Holy Week is celebrated with beautiful parades and traditional music played on bamboo trumpets, maracas, drums…even coffee cans if that is all they can find. The holiday is a little mixture of both Catholic and Voodoo traditions!
  3. ETHIOPIA: In Ethiopia, the first Easter service usually starts at 8 pm on Easter Saturday (similar to our Easter Vigil), but it lasts until 3 am Easter morning! Those who go to this service stay for the whole Mass and wear their Easter finest. After the service, people go home and have breakfast to celebrate with sourdough bread, which is traditionally cut by a priest or the head man of the family.
  4. lorca-711611_640SPAIN: There are many processions through the streets of towns in Spain at night to celebrate Easter. The ‘floats’ have decorated figures, covered in gold, silver or beautiful cloth, telling the Easter story. These floats are carried by 40 or 50 people through the procession, which can last 4 – 5 hours.
  5. UNITED KINGDOM: On a Sunday in the middle of Lent, the U.K. has a day called ‘Mothering Sunday,’ similar to our Mother’s Day. There are special church services and flowers are given to mothers to thank them for all they do.

Easter Celebration at NSC

This year we celebrated Easter early with our Members and the children from Bright Horizons for a fun multigenerational, multidenominational Easter activity. Everyone had a great time! Our Members also made spring wreaths this week, a symbol of renewal and rebirth.

When we are not celebrating, we encourage our Members to socialize, exercise, play games and puzzles, sing, clap, dance, spend time on the computer, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.
