Presidential Facts You May Not Know

By Mike Cooper

There are many facts about our presidents that are widely known. But as we celebrate Presidents’ Day, we thought we’d share some facts about a few presidents that you may not know.

Did you know?

  • jb_nation_grant_1_mThomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia. He is the only president to have founded an institution of higher learning.
  • Andrew Johnson was drunk during his inauguration. He was noticeably drunk during his inauguration speech!
  • Ulysses S. Grant got a speeding ticket while riding a horse. He was going too fast down a Washington street! Go figure…
  • William Taft served as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after leaving office. He was the only cowboy-67630_640former president to serve as the head of two branches of government and later swore in two other presidents.
  • Woodrow Wilson is the highest educated president. He earned a Ph.D. in Political Science and History from Johns Hopkins University. No other president has a Ph.D.
  • Gerald Ford was a fashion model. He and his wife, Betty, both modeled earlier in their lives. President Ford even posed for the cover of Cosmopolitan in the 1940s!
  • Ronald Reagan was a stand-up comic. We all know he was an actor, but when that career was on the skids, he took a gig in Las Vegas as a stand-up comic for a few weeks.

At Naperville Senior Center, we look up facts about holidays, like Presidents’ Day, to share with our Members so they continue to learn and use their brain power. In addition to mental exercises, we encourage socialization, games and puzzles, singing, clapping, dancing, computer time and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.

Love is in the Air

Love is in the Air

Love is in the Air

By Mike Cooper

heart-598048_640As the song goes, “Love is in the air, in the whisper of the trees. Love is in the air, in the thunder of the sea.” As we close in on Valentine’s Day this Sunday, there are many things pink and red in stores, on television and in ads. Retailers want you to believe that your loved one will love you more with a card, candy, jewelry, or dinner out.

I’m not suggesting that you skip getting your loved ones those things (my sweetie may see one or more of those), but what can you do for others, even strangers, that would make their day?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Pay it forward. When you go through a drive-thru, pay for the person’s coffee or meal in the car behind you. You have no idea how a small gesture like that can brighten someone’s day. If they do it for the next car, you will have started a trend to brighten the day for a lot of people.
  • Shovel someone’s driveway. Whether an older person lives next to you or someone younger, shovel their drive when it snows just because. Right now the forecast calls for snow on Valentine’s Day; what better way to brighten someone’s day than clearing the snow for them.
  • Make a meal for someone who can’t get out. Do you know an older adult who doesn’t go out much (or at all) or just someone who is sick or struggling? Make a meal and deliver it to them. If you are delivering to an older adult, make sure to have clear instructions on it for reheating. A hot meal can really warm the spirit! Better yet, invite them over for dinner.
  • Make a call. Is there a relative or friend you haven’t talked to in a while (especially someone older)? (I mean really talked to, not just a post on Facebook.) Pick up the phone and call them. They would love to hear from you, just to know that someone is thinking of them. Ask them about a favorite Valentine memory.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to cost a fortune; you can make someone’s day in small ways. Just give it some thought.

Naperville Senior Center provides a warm, safe environment for your loved one when they can’t safely be on their own during the day. We provide them with a hot, noontime meal and the socialization to keep them from being lonely. Your loved one is truly our loved one.

Members are welcome to be as independent as they can safely be while they are with us. In fact, one of our Members drives himself to our center! He could go anywhere he wants, but due to the socialization and other cool things, he chooses to come here a few days a week. In addition to socialization, we encourage exercise, games and puzzles, singing, clapping, dancing, computer time and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.

Three Takeaways from Super Bowl 50

Three Takeaways from Super Bowl 50

Three Takeaways from Super Bowl 50

By Mike Cooper

american-football-220047_640There is a lot of hoopla surrounding the Big Game this Sunday.  It’s the 50th Super Bowl; it’s the biggest age difference between opposing quarterbacks in the Big Game; and it could very well be the last game of a future hall-of-fame quarterback.

What do those things have to do with you and me? Here are three takeaways from Super Bowl 50:

  • Whether you are old or young, you can be a leader. Don’t think there is a certain age range for leading. Presidents have been young and old. These 2 teams are led by their quarterbacks, who are young and old (relatively speaking, of course). There are many qualities that make up a leader; age is not one of them.
  • Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Peyton Manning is not the dominate force he once was, yet his team is in the Super Bowl this year. In addition to his contributions, he expects the rest of his team – offense and defense – to step and play, well, as a team. When you need help – a little or a lot – ask for it. You’ll be surprised at the support you receive.
  • If you can do it alone, then do it. The only thing we haven’t seen Cam Newton do is catch his own passes! Yet he has passed, run, jumped and dove his way into the NFL record books. Peyton Manning, with all his NFL records, was never that kind of a quarterback. If Cam can continue being that physical as he gets older, our hats come off to him. As Americans continue to get older, there are things we may be able to do safely on our own. If so, do them and enjoy the independence.

Naperville Senior Center provides a warm, safe environment for your loved one when they can’t safely be on their own during the day. Members are welcome to be as independent as they can safely be while they are with us. In fact, one of our Members drives himself to our center! 7 Tips to Convince a Parent to Attend an Adult Day Center

7 Tips to Convince a Parent to Attend an Adult Day Center

7 Tips to Convince a Parent to Attend an Adult Day Center

By Lucy Lazarony  – Adult Day Center

Having a place where your parent is able to go during the day for care, rehab services or just socializing can be a godsend for caregiving families. But you may find that your loved one is reluctant to try out an Adult Day Center. We offer seven tips on how to encourage your mom or dad below.

What Are They?

Adult day centers may be located at a hospital, community center or church. They may be run by a nonprofit or a for-profit company. Some provide health care and supervision as well as group activities like crafts, games, exercise and pet therapy. Some specialize in caring for seniors with dementia or other illnesses.

DSC_0092There are more than 5,000 adult day centers across the country with more than 260,000 participants, according to the National Adult Day Services Association. At a cost of up to $118 a day in Illinois, according to the 2015 Genworth Cost of Care survey, they are considerably cheaper than hiring home health aides.

Once you decide which center is best for your parent, the following 7 tips may make the concept of an adult day program more appealing to him or her.

  1. Don’t call it day care. Referring to the programs as “adult day care” may offend some who consider “day care” infantilizing. “Most of them don’t call it adult day care,” says Leah Eskenazi, director of operations for the Family Caregiver Alliance. “They’re going to meet their group. Some people call it going to their club or their class.” At their club or class, there may be yoga, music, movies, art and crafts projects, plus snacks and meals.
  2. DSC_0414Make it fun. Give your parent a fun reason to go. Is there a fantastic arts program? Or another activity that your mother or father would really enjoy? “The first day, look for a hook,” Eskenazi recommends. “Is there a trip or an activity they would like? Make sure you plan for the first day so they’re engaged right from the start.”
  3. Encourage your parent to volunteer. If mom or dad seems lukewarm on going to a day center, you might say: ‘They could use your help as a volunteer,” Eskenazi says. Of course, check with the center first.
  4. l1 member computerAsk a professional to step in. If you and your parent just aren’t seeing eye-to-eye on attending a day center, you may wish to reach out to a third party for help. Your mother or father may go willingly if a doctor or a social worker offers the suggestion. At Alzheimer’s Community Care, which runs 10 dementia-specific adult day centers in South Florida, a family nurse consultant will often encourage a parent to attend a day center when an adult child is having no luck. Once through the door, he or she is often happy to be there. “We hear these stories all the time,” says Kathleen Herd, vice president of development for the organization. In one case, the family nurse consultant drove the mother right to the day center. “Her face lit up. Here was her peer group and she didn’t even know she was missing it,” says Mary Barnes, executive director of Alzheimer’s Community Care.
  5. Cardio ExerciseStart with a short schedule. Don’t ask a parent to stay too long at a day center on the first day. “Make it short. Make it easy. Don’t make someone stay the whole day,” Eskenazi says. Don’t overwhelm a parent by booking too many days early on. Keep the schedule as light as possible. “Start with maybe one or two days per week. I would recommend someone starting an adult day center with a shorter schedule and then working up to more days and more hours over time,” Eskenazi says. Be supportive. If a day center is a positive experience for a parent, be upbeat and positive and encourage him or her to attend. “Let them decide if they want more days,” Eskenazi says.
  6. Expect a few complaints. It may take a parent a little bit of time to adjust to attending a day center. And you may hear some kvetching during that transition. For example, a parent might complain, “There are too many old people here!” “You might say, ‘They could use a little young blood there‘” Eskenazi suggests. Be patient during the adjustment period. NSC 091515a“It often takes several visits to an adult day center for a new person to feel comfortable in a new setting and new routine,” Barnes says. “The ideal situation [in their eyes] is for them to be with you, and you can’t do it 24/7. Ask the staff for help in making the transition from home to the day center.” A parent with a neurocognitive disorder may be insecure about new experiences. But if you are a strong proponent for the day center, a parent may feel more comfortable attending.
  7. Use good judgment. If a parent just needs a little encouragement to attend a day center, keep encouraging. But if a day center just isn’t working out for your parent, take a step back for a while. “Sometimes, it doesn’t work. Sometimes, the person is not in the right place. You can’t pressure somebody,” Eskenazi suggests. “Step back and wait a month or two and try again.”

2015 – Our Best Year Yet!

Onsite with FamIt’s hard to believe that it was just a year ago when we received our permit to begin construction on the Naperville Senior Center space. I remember being there on Christmas 2014 with Pam, Emily and Zach with our hardhats on looking at the drawings and realizing this was really going to happen!

NSC 031715aOur best year yet has been jam packed since opening our doors on February 25, 2015!

  • Our charter Member, Charlene, started with us the next week. She continues to brighten our days with every visit!
  • NSC 031715We hosted our first of two ribbon cuttings on St. Patrick’s Day with the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce.
  • Several Members have joined us throughout the year. We are grateful to have each and every one of them with us!
  • NSC 062315We hosted a mini Walk for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society in June, and raised over $2,400 to fight cancer. We want to be sure our Members continue to exercise – and being able to do it for an important cause was a great motivator!
  • NSC 091515NSC 103015We provided fun activities for our Members including planting a garden (and then enjoying the fruits and vegetables of their labor), dressing up on Talk Like a Pirate Day, and having children come by before Halloween to get treats and play games with our Members.
  • NSC 120915We have hosted several Continuing Education (CEU) Workshops after hours for nurses, therapists and social workers. We are happy to provide this amazing venue for the community when they need to come together to gather and learn.
  • NSC 110715We hosted our 1st Annual Fall Craft and Vendor Fair in November. Thank you to all 23 vendors who joined us for a wonderful event. Our Members were even involved in making most of our crafts that were sold that day.
  • NSC 120815We hosted a Business After Hours event with co-sponsor Oasis Senior Advisors, for the Naperville Chamber of Commerce in December. We had a fantastic turnout; thank you to all the Chamber and community members who joined us to celebrate the holidays and check our facility.

With all this happening in the last 12 months, we can’t wait to see what 2016 brings! Our hope is that everyone has a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! We want to thank everyone for making 2015 our best year yet.

If you haven’t had a chance to join us at one of these events, just contact us to schedule a quick tour or a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.
