3 Powerful Benefits of Mailing Letters to Seniors Right Now

When was the last time you mailed a letter or a card to someone? We are not talking about sending text messages or an e-mail, but an actual card in the mail?  It may have been a while, which is a shame.  I remember looking forward to getting cards in the mail for holidays or special occasions.  Now it’s a Facebook post or a text.  Don’t get me wrong, those are great!  But many seniors are not online or if they are, they would still appreciate an old-fashioned snail-mail once-in-a-while.

senior activities, letters

Send a letter to a senior today! Even if it is just to say ‘hello, I’m thinking of you!’

I know that actual greeting cards can be expensive; prices seem to keep going up with everything these days. But why not get a package of stationary to send a note just to say you care or pick up a box of blank cards where you can put in the sentiment?  If you have kids, take out the construction paper and crayons or markers and let them make a homemade card.

Here are 3 powerful benefits of mailing letters to seniors:

  • Improves Mood. Who isn’t happy knowing that someone is thinking about them? Your loved one goes to the mailbox and sees something in there other than bills or catalogs. Already that improves their mood! Then they read your note and they are in an even better mood!
  • Increases Sensory Stimulation. Not only can a loved one read your handwriting in a letter, they can feel it. It is not just type-written text on a screen. There are more senses in use when a letter or card is mailed versus an online greeting. Increased sensory stimulation is used as a therapy to help older adults with dementia; why not let your loved one have the added benefit with the experience.
  • It’s a Win-Win. Your loved one will be happy to get something from you, but you will feel good you sent it. An online greeting still conveys a sentiment, but why not go the extra step once-in-a-while. It only takes a couple minutes to put something in the mail. The better you feel about the experience, the more you are going to want to do it, and the positive cycle continues!

At Naperville Senior Center we provide sensory stimulation to our Members every day. Some of our Members have communicated with their grandchildren across the world from our computer station, and we recently swapped notes with the children over at Bright Horizons on ‘letter day.’ Very rewarding watching our Members smile as the read the notes.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.

4 Activities to Celebrate Earth Day with your Senior Loved One

4 Activities to Celebrate Earth Day with your Senior Loved One

4 Activities to Celebrate Earth Day with your Senior Loved One

This year, Earth Day is Saturday, April 22. Since 1970 it is a day on which many people around the world will show support for environmental protection. There are events in many communities on that day and throughout the week. Unfortunately, many seniors are unable to get to these events; they may not have transportation or physically cannot participate. But that that does not mean they can’t be involved in their own way!

Here are 4 activities you can do with your senior loved one this week to help them celebrate Earth Day:

  1. Celebrate Earth Day

Our Members help plant our garden in the spring and enjoy the fruits of their labor throughout the summer!

Plant a garden. Who doesn’t love fresh-picked produce?! Think herb garden, or maybe a couple tomato plants. An herb garden would be perfect for indoors and could easily be transplanted outside next month. If you are handy, you could build a small, raised planter box where your loved one could comfortably sit or stand to help plant the garden. Not only are the herbs and vegetables good for them, they will appreciate being involved. Farm to table would be about 10 feet. It doesn’t get any more ‘local’ than that!

  2. Recycle. Think about all the items in your own home that you haven’t used in years. Now think about all the things in your parents’ home that they haven’t used for decades! Why wait for something to happen to them before you go through some of these items with them? At that point, the process will be a lot more stressful because you will have suffered a loss and some things might wind up in the garbage instead of being donated or sold.

Don’t try to tackle the whole house at once; it can be too overwhelming. Pick a closet, drawer or corner of a basement and go through these things with them a little at a time. Give them the chance to tell a story about the item, if there is one. Then determine if the item should be given to someone in the family, donated or sold. If there are old family photos, see if your loved one remembers who is in the picture, when it was taken or the reason for it. Save that information somewhere and scan the picture(s) so they are safe digitally.

  1. Plant a tree. This might not be something your senior loved ones can do themselves, but they can still be involved. Find out what their favorite tree is (hopefully something that grows well in your zone). If they still live in their own home, find a spot to plant a tree, even a little one, where they can see it. Maybe they could help water it from time to time. They can take pride in seeing something grow and live on for a long time, knowing that they were involved with its growth. If they live in a community where you cannot do this, maybe you can plant their tree by your house. When they come over to see you, point out the tree they that picked out – their ‘favorite’ tree.
  2. Celebrate earth day

    Spring flowers are in bloom!

Take a walk. Especially this spring, the trees and flowers are in full bloom and the weather has been warm. Get your loved one outdoors to enjoy the beautiful scenery. If they can only go a short distance, walk down their street to see the tulips and daffodils that are in front of their neighbors’ houses. If they can go walk farther, check out the beautiful scenery in your town or neighboring towns.

In the Naperville area, the flowers and trees along the Riverwalk and in the Morton Arboretum are in full bloom. There are plenty of trails, parks and preserves in the area to walk and enjoy the sights.

The last 2 years we have had our own raised garden where our Members help to plant, water, pick and eat the wonderful vegetables we grow. We are looking forward to having that garden again! Our farm to table distance is only about 20 feet!

When they are not gardening, our Members socialize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, visualize, exercise, have fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

6 Ways to Help a Depressed Loved One

6 Ways to Help a Depressed Loved One

6 Ways to Help a Depressed Loved One

setting boundaries, depression, world health dayApril 7 is World Health Day. The theme for World Health Day 2017 is Depression: Let’s Talk. Although depression is not a normal part of aging, it can be common among older adults. Even though the CDC estimates that approximately 7 million seniors in America suffer some type of depression each year, most seniors are happy with their lives.

Depression tends to be more common in people who have other health conditions. According to the CDC, 80 percent of older adults have at least one chronic health condition and 50 percent have two or more, such as heart disease or cancer. That puts seniors at a greater risk of having depression.

Depression goes beyond ‘feeling blue’ or having an ‘off’ day. We all experience sad feelings at times! For someone who is clinically depressed, they cannot just snap out of it. It may occur when there is a significant change in an older adult’s life – the death of a loved one, moving away from family or friends, or a serious illness. However, the symptoms of depression may go beyond being sad.

depression, world health dayOther symptoms of depression include:

  • Being more tired than usual
  • Restless sleep or having a hard time falling asleep
  • Being irritable
  • Confusion
  • Lack of attention

Some of these symptoms, like confusion or lack of attention, may look like Alzheimer’s, even though the person does not have that disease. If the person is on medication, especially multiple types of medication, there could be side effects that contribute to depression. These are things that should be discussed with a medical professional.

What can you do to help an older loved one who you think may be depressed?

Here are 6 things you can do:

  • Healthy Happy, depression, world health dayInvite your loved one out. Take them out for a meal, a visit to a park, or to your house to see the grandkids. Get them out of their home where they are alone and into another environment where they can interact with other people.
  • Schedule social activities. Does your loved one have friends or other family members in the area? Do they like to do things at the ‘Y?’ Schedule activities for your loved. If you cannot always take them places, see if someone else can take them to an activity. Many communities have senior transportation available. Again, having more social interaction is important for seniors.
  • Make healthy meals for them. Eating healthy meals has positive benefits beyond your waistline. When you feel better physically, your mental and emotional state will benefit too. Your loved one may not want to cook for themselves, so they resort to frozen or other packaged foods. Even though the package may say they are healthy, they are filled with preservatives. If you can cook for your loved one and package that food so they simply have to thaw and reheat, you have created a win-win!
  • Review their prescriptions. Are they taking the correct doses at the right time of the day? Taking more or less medication than prescribed could have serious side effects.
  • Take them for a medical exam. If the symptoms of depression persist, a medical professional can do a thorough exam to determine the root cause of the symptoms. Once a diagnosis is made, make sure your loved one follows up with any treatment.
  • Adult Day Center, successBring them to Naperville Senior Center. At NSC, we provide the social interaction that seniors need. From gaming to exercising to singing and dancing, we let our Members express themselves throughout the day. We also provide a hot, healthy noon-time meal.

Each day our Members spend time socializing, verbalizing, improvising, evangelizing, visualizing, exercising, having fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Can Healthy Snacks Taste Good Too?

Can Healthy Snacks Taste Good Too?

Can Healthy Snacks Taste Good Too?

By Mike Cooper

As we celebrate National Nutrition Month, we want to talk about snacks, specifically healthy snacks. Who doesn’t love salty chips, crackers with cheese or a tasty dip? But can you really have just one? Probably not – and that’s the problem. Those salty snacks can be addicting! I know… I’ve been able to plow through a whole bag in one sitting, and they are not good for you!

Why does snacking have to be bad? Aren’t there any choices that are tasty, satisfying AND good for you? Yes there is! You just have to think about it and make good choices.

Here are a few healthy snacks you can have that are satisfying; without all the salt, fat and preservatives:

  • nuts-768243_640 healthy snacksHummus and Veggies. If you can make your own hummus, that’s even better, but store-bought is good too.  There is less fat than dairy-based dips. Add some fresh veggies like snap peas, sweet peppers, carrots, cukes, celery or broccoli with it and you will have a tasty snack that will fill you up.
  • Go Nuts!  Nuts are a good source of protein; just watch how many you eat because they also have a lot of fat.
  • Protein Smoothie. No, we don’t mean go out to a smoothie shop, either. Those store-bought drinks have way too many calories and sugar. If you can, make your own. It’s easy with some protein powder, plain Greek yogurt, water and some frozen berries or a banana. You’ll get the protein and fiber you need to feel full until dinner!
  • fleet healthy snacksApple Slices with Almond Butter. If you want sweet and salty at the same time, try slicing an apple and add some almond butter to it. It is delish! Fun tip: make little boats with the apple slices, and use a slice of cheese on a toothpick for the sail. Yummy! We did this on Talk Like a Pirate Day!
  • Fresh salsa with corn tortilla chips. Beware of jarred salsa; many of them have added sugar and preservatives. Read the nutrition label before taking something off the shelf. You could look for fresh salsa (or pico de gallo) in your local store or make your own. It will stay fresh for a few days. Tomatoes, red onion, hot peppers (jalapeno, serrano, etc.), cilantro, garlic, lime juice and a dash of salt are all the ingredients you need.  Pair that with corn tortilla chips and you will have a great snack.

Our Members receive a hot noon-time meal and healthy snacks throughout the day.

At Naperville Senior Center, we pride ourselves in the fact that we serve our Members a hot, nutritious noon-time meal as well as healthy snacks during the day. We have fruit cups, applesauce, bananas, apples, oranges, and granola bars available throughout the day.

We know it can be hard for seniors to make their own meals, so we want them to have a great one with us. In the warmer months, we even grow our own herbs and vegetables (with our Members’ help) and serve them at lunch. Our ‘farm to table’ distance is about 20 feet! It doesn’t get more locally-grown than that!

Naperville Senior Center provides a warm, safe environment for your loved one when they can’t safely be on their own during the day. Members are welcome to be as independent as they can safely be while they are with us. In fact, one of our Members drives himself to our center! He could go anywhere he wants, but due to the socialization and other cool things we offer, he chooses to come here a few days a week. We encourage exercise, games and puzzles, singing, clapping, dancing, computer time and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.

Come Visit! To learn more about how NSC can provide a respite for caregivers and a great social environment for your loved one, contact us at 630-857-3017. We invite you to Come Visit, see what we have to offer, and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

Being Happy is Good for Your Health

Being Happy is Good for Your Health

Being Happy is Good for Your Health

By Mike Cooper

happy memberThere have been several studies showing that being happy is good for your health. There is a connection between being happy and optimistic, and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Happy, optimistic people tend to maintain good habits as well – exercising, eating healthy, and getting a good night’s sleep. These things help reduce your risk of heart disease.

Want to be as happy as this member? Here are 5 tips:

  • Be Optimistic. You can be a ‘glass-is-half-empty’ or ‘glass-is-half-full’ kind of person. Choose half-full. It doesn’t cost anything! Try to look on the bright side, even when the negative might overshadow it.
  • meditation-609235_640Breathe. Not just breathing to live, but deep, controlled breaths. Meditating for even 5 minutes a day can help you focus and put you at ease. There are a variety of classes and YouTube videos that can teach you the right way to meditate.
  • Do Something Nice Each Day. It could be for you or for someone else. The act of doing something nice will give you a positive mental boost and will turn that frown upside-down! Sometimes when I have done something nice I hear, “You have done your good deed for the day.” I reply, “There is no daily limit on good deeds.”
  • Get Some Sunlight. Sometimes that is easier said than done in these Chicago winters, but there are plenty of days when the sun is shining. Open the blinds and let the sun in. If you work in an office space with no windows, try to get out and enjoy the sun for even a few minutes – even if you have to sit in your car if it is cold outside. Here at Naperville Senior Center we have several windows to bring in natural light. We think it makes a difference when people can see a beautiful day!
  • Accept Yourself as You Are. Is your nose too big, your hair too curly (or straight), or you wish you could drop those last few pounds? Don’t beat yourself up over it; accept yourself as you are right now. That doesn’t mean you should avoid self-improvement, but take it in stride. Being critical of yourself will take away all the positive things you do for others.

At Naperville Senior Center we strive to bring happiness each day to our Members. We want them to enjoy their time with us through socialization, activities, games and puzzles, exercise and even breaking bread together. We are thrilled when we hear them say they look forward to coming each day; we know we are succeeding!
