Are Frozen Foods Good For You?

Are Frozen Foods Good For You?

Are Frozen Foods Good For You?

frozen foods, healthy foodsDo you eat as many vegetables in the winter as you do in the summer? Fresh vegetables tend to cost more when they are out of season – and a lot of them are out of season this time of the year. With winter upon us, we ask the question, “Are frozen foods good for you?” Specifically, are frozen vegetables good for you? There are many opinions about different types of vegetables, such as organic fresh, regular fresh, canned, frozen, etc. How do you know what to choose?

Here are some helpful tips about different types of vegetables:

  • Canned: The least nutritious of all veggies. They tend to lose a lot of nutrients during the preservation process before being canned. If you can stay away from canned vegetables, you’ll be better off.
  • Fresh (whether organic or not): Get fresh vegetables if they are in season. But unless they are locally sourced, they are probably picked before they are ripe since they have to travel days or more to their final destination. This produce will not have their full nutritional value, even if they look ripe on the outside.
  • Frozen: Frozen vegetables are usually picked at their ripeness, and quickly blanched to remove bacteria. Then they are flash-frozen to lock in that freshness. This produce has the most nutrient-rich vitamins and minerals. Keep in mind that the longer they sit in the freezer, the more those nutrients will begin to break down. So don’t let them sit forever! Be leery of frozen vegetables in sauces that can add a lot of fat and calories. Look for the plain frozen vegetables.

Make sure your loved ones get the nutrients they need

It is important to get in as many fruits and vegetables as you can each day (the guideline is 9 servings!). Whether fresh or frozen, you are getting the nutrients your body needs. If the produce you are looking for is not in season, you know it is coming from far away, or you just want the convenience, consider getting frozen. You’ll be happy you did.

We provide nutritious AND delicious meals for our members

Naperville Senior Center provides a hot, noontime meal and snacks for each of our Members. Our veggies, biscuits and ice cream arrive frozen. Our entrées arrive frozen and fully cooked. We heat them up in our convection oven and Members rave about the deliciousness of everything including pot roast, baked cod, chicken Kiev, meat loaf, chicken dumplings and more.

Dessert time is very popular with our Members. There are fruit cups, cookies and fresh fruit, but the frozen treats are preferred. In addition to great food, we encourage our Members to socialize, exercise, play games and puzzles, sing, clap, dance, spend time on the computer, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Naperville Senior Center is Ready for Primetime!

By Mike Cooper Seniors 60563

After a lot of planning, persistence and perspiration, Naperville Senior Center is finally ready to open on Wednesday, February 25th!

This dream has been a long time coming for me and Pam; going back over 30 years to when we first started dating in college. Even at that time we thought our professions together would make a good fit for a senior center. We are excited to see our dream come alive in a way that will help the seniors in our community stay in their homes. Seniors 60563

But we could not have done it without the support from so many people. Thank you to:

  • Our family – your love and support throughout this process has been our rock.
  • Our friends – we appreciate your prayers and believing in our dream.
  • Our suppliers/partners – you each brought your expertise to the table and helped us make our dream a reality. Seniors 60563
  • Our Members, future members and their families – our goal is to provide you or your loved one with a nurturing community, independence and an alternative to institutional living. We will strive to provide you with delicious, nutritious meals and stimulating activities in a community environment.

If you know of a senior who could benefit from having a safe, comfortable place to go Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, please tell them or their caregiver about Naperville Senior Center. Seniors 60563

4 Tips for Eating Well

4 Tips for Eating Well

It is as important to your good health to eat well as it is to get regular exercise. But what does that mean to aging adults? Depending on your age and your level of activity, your calorie intake will vary. According to the National Institute on Aging (NIA), a moderately active woman over age 50 should consume about 1,800 calories a day to stay at her current weight. For an older man, that number is 2,200 to 2,400.

Eating well may help you stay healthy longer by reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, bone loss, some types of cancer and anemia. If you are already battling one of these diseases, eating well, along with being physically active, can help you better manage them. If an older adult is overweight, it could put them at an even greater risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Below are 4 tips for eating well:fruits-386758_1280

  • Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean sources of protein and dairy products
  • Eat food that is low in added sugars and solid fats
  • Eat food that is lower in sodium
  • Eat less processed foods, such as lunchmeat or frozen entrees

Eating well doesn’t mean giving up food that tastes good. It is simply a matter of finding good food that tastes great. “At Naperville Senior Center, we have healthy, nutritious meals,” said Executive Director Pam Cooper, “but we want our members to remember them because they taste great.”

Contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, Home Away From Home.

Presidential Facts You May Not Know

Presidential Facts You May Not Know

Presidential Facts You May Not Know

By Mike Cooper

There are many facts about our presidents that are widely known. But as we celebrate Presidents’ Day, we thought we’d share some facts about a few presidents that you may not know.

Did you know?

  • jb_nation_grant_1_mThomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia. He is the only president to have founded an institution of higher learning.
  • Andrew Johnson was drunk during his inauguration. He was noticeably drunk during his inauguration speech!
  • Ulysses S. Grant got a speeding ticket while riding a horse. He was going too fast down a Washington street! Go figure…
  • William Taft served as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after leaving office. He was the only cowboy-67630_640former president to serve as the head of two branches of government and later swore in two other presidents.
  • Woodrow Wilson is the highest educated president. He earned a Ph.D. in Political Science and History from Johns Hopkins University. No other president has a Ph.D.
  • Gerald Ford was a fashion model. He and his wife, Betty, both modeled earlier in their lives. President Ford even posed for the cover of Cosmopolitan in the 1940s!
  • Ronald Reagan was a stand-up comic. We all know he was an actor, but when that career was on the skids, he took a gig in Las Vegas as a stand-up comic for a few weeks.

At Naperville Senior Center, we look up facts about holidays, like Presidents’ Day, to share with our Members so they continue to learn and use their brain power. In addition to mental exercises, we encourage socialization, games and puzzles, singing, clapping, dancing, computer time and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.

Caregiver Respite: 4 ways to make time for yourself

Caregiver Respite: 4 ways to make time for yourself

Caregiver Respite: 4 ways to make time for yourself

Are you a caregiver for a senior loved one? If so, you probably focus on that person throughout much of your day (and night). Their needs, wants and wishes may come first. Are they too hot or too cold? Are they comfortable? Hungry? Are they drinking enough water? What can I do to increase their physical or mental strength?  These are all valid concerns.

But what about YOU?  What are your needs, wants and wishes?  What about your physical and mental strength? Your days are long; sometimes you feel like you had a 32-hour day. It is as important for caregivers to take time for themselves as it is for them to care for the ones they love. If you are not at your best, physically or mentally, it will be harder for you to take care of them.

Here are 4 ways you can energize your body and spirit. Pick one and start today:
  • caregiver-respiteWorkout. Go to a gym, park or even just around the neighborhood. Whether you walk, run, or lift weights, exercise is important to keep you feeling good, both physically and mentally. Schedule the time, like any other appointment, to get it done on a regular basis. Start with 10 minutes. Start today. There is a personal trainer three doors west of our Center.
  • Schedule a spa day. It’s nice to take your loved one to get her nails or hair done so she feels better about herself. But what about you? Take time once-in-a-while to get a mani/pedi, massage, facial or other spa service. Why? treatment-caregiver-respite-1327811_300Just because! Go somewhere calm and relaxing and let the troubles of the day just melt away, even for a little while. You’ll come out feeling refreshed! There is a Mario Tricoci 150 feet from our Center.
  • Have a hobby. You think, “How can I have a hobby when I have my kids and husband to take care of, plus being a caregiver for my loved one (and possibly a job too)?” It could be as easy as regularly getting a new book from the library or more time-consuming as taking a class. The point is that you are learning something and growing. This is about you, not your family or co-workers. If you take part in something you enjoy, you will be more engaged mentally. There is an antique store five doors west of our Center; lots of cool items to look at as you enjoy some me-time.
  • restaurant-caregiver-respite-690975_300Spend time with friends. We stress the importance of socialization for seniors. It helps to improve their attitude, reduces the risk of mental health issues like depression, and lowers blood pressure. The same is true for their caregivers. You spend a lot of time taking care of your loved one, but you also need time to be social with your friends. Have lunch, meet for drinks, or do one of the above items with a friend. It’s important for you to socialize with people outside of your family! Some of our favorite spots include Crosstown Pub & Grill, Sullivan’s, Top Golf and Ogden 6 Movie Theater (inexpensive and THE best popcorn on earth).

Make sure you take time for yourself!

Not only is it hard being a caregiver, it is also hard to take time for yourself when you are caring for a senior loved one. That is one of the reasons Naperville Senior Center is here; to create a ‘home away from home’ for your senior loved one AND give the caregiver, you, time to yourself. Whether you need time to run errands, work in the garden, catch up on chores, be more productive at work, get to the gym, take a class or just take a nap, we provide a safe, fun environment for our Members.

Each day our Members spend time socializing, verbalizing, improvising, evangelizing, visualizing, exercising, having fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: to learn more about how NSC can provide a respite for you and a great social environment for your loved one, contact us at 630.857.3017. You can also schedule a tour to see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”
