What Does ‘Mother’ Mean to You?

What Does ‘Mother’ Mean to You?

What Does ‘Mother’ Mean to You?

By Mike Cooper

With Mother’s Day right around the corner, have you thought about what ‘mother’ really means to you?

Sure, a mother is “a woman in relation to a child or children to whom she has given birth.” But being a mother goes beyond biology. She is someone who loves, nourishes, protects, teaches, comforts, guides, nurtures, supports, reassures…and so much more.

IMG_3393_cropPam is all of those things to our children. There couldn’t be a better role model in their lives (and mine!) to show us how to care and cope, love and learn, grow and guide. But I am sure we all know another woman in our lives who meets those criteria – a friend, a teacher, a mentor; all of these women could be a mother figure to someone.

So when you wish your mother (or wife) a happy Mother’s Day this year, remember to also wish it to those other females in your life who have done so much for you and for others. There is certainly enough love to go around!

If you know of someone that cannot safely stay at home alone and would like being around other adults, participate in fun activities and exercises, and enjoy a hot noon time meal, let them know about our adult day services facility.

Happy Mother’s Day!

We would like to have your loved one see our facility and have lunch with us! Contact us to get schedule a FREE 3-hour trial so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, Home Away From Home.

Make believe is good at any age

Make believe is good at any age

Make believe is good at any age

By Mike Cooper

Do you remember playing cowboys and Indians with your friends when you were little?  Or maybe you played doctor and your dog was the patient. You were able to think about things differently because it didn’t have to be real. Teddy bear as a nurse? Sure why not! An upside down garbage can as the mountain you climbed to scout the Indians? Sounds just fine!

Why did we stop playing make believe? Other things got in our way – girls (or boys, as the case may be), cars, other friends who didn’t ‘believe’ like we did.

There are many benefits from playing make believe, regardless of your age. Here are 3 benefits for older adults:

  1. NSC 091515aImproved Mood: When you played make-believe as a child, weren’t you happy and carefree? As an adult, you will have those same feelings. It’s fun to not have structure sometimes and just be free to act how you want (well, within reason…). A little make-believe and your older loved one will feel better and maybe, for a little while, forget about other things that might be aching.
  2. Socialization: Although you could play make-believe by yourself, it is more fun in a group. At Naperville Senior Center, our Members celebrated Talk Like a Pirate day last fall by dressing up and acting like pirates. We all had a great time! Think of the great memories your children would have of their grandparents if you go them to play make believe with their grandparents! It is something they will look back on fondly.
  3. Improved Memory: With the role-playing that comes with make believe, an older adult has to remember his/her character, that of the other players and interact with them. Whether a cowboy, pirate, or astronaut, an older adult will draw from history to act the part. They may try to sound like John Wayne, throw in an ‘Ahoy, matie’ or remember, ‘one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.’ Keeping an older adult thinking and engaged mentally is so beneficial to their ongoing mental health.

Whether your loved one is a NSC Member, visiting with their grandchildren or just looking for something fun and different to do, encourage them to play make believe. The benefits are great and the memories will be lasting.

Make believe your loved one is a NSC Member… there are a Physical Therapist, an Occupational Therapy Assistant and a Registered Nurse in the living room… there’s a hot delicious meal at noon… there are opportunities to socialize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, visualize, exercise, have fun, and plenty of activities to provide mental and physical stimulation. Aarrr! Ye should be signin’ up fer the free grub!

What Does ‘Mother’ Mean to You?

Moms Should Be Celebrated All Year Long

Moms Should Be Celebrated All Year Long

Mother’s Day / Moms should be Celebrated all year long

Now that the calendar has flipped to May, it’s time to think about Mother’s Day. Lines at the florists and grocery stores will get longer, with people buying flowers, candy, cards and other mementos to give their mothers. But why do we only recognize and celebrate mom one day of the year? For all they do, mothers should be celebrated all year long! Moms don’t get ‘days off’ when they are sick, their job is 24/7, and many times they don’t get the recognition they deserve.

Although Mother’s Day is the official day to celebrate all the moms, grandmas, aunts, and other women who are role models, here are 3 things you can do on this day or any other day to say ‘thank you’ to your mother:

  • dependent-441408_640Help your mom with projects around her house. Does your mom need a room painted, a carpet cleaned or a banister tightened? If you are capable, help her fix things that are broken or just in need of repair. If her house is in better condition, she will feel better. And you will have some time together with her in the process.
  • Listen to stories. Find an old photo album and go through it with her. Let her tell the stories behind the pictures, even if you have heard them before. Maybe you will learn something new from her stories!
  • Take her for a pedicure, manicure or facial. What lady doesn’t want to get a little glammed up once-in-a-while? Even if it is just for a manicure at a local salon, your mom will feel pampered for a little while. This doesn’t have to be a once-a-year event; take your mom periodically ‘just because.’

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms!

I want to take this time to wish Pam a very happy Mother’s Day. Zak and Emily couldn’t have a better mom, friend and role model than Pam; I am grateful for all she has done for this family every day!

We treat all of our female Members like they were our moms! When we hear them say they look forward to coming each day, we know we are doing our best. Each week there is something new, different and interesting for them to do or learn; we want our Members to grow through socialization, improvisation, visualization, exercise, and simple fun to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Benefits of Adult Day Services Facilities

Benefits of Adult Day Services Facilities

Benefits of Adult Day Services Facilities

By Mary Hoskins, RN

Have you thought about adult day care for your loved ones? Adult day care can be the perfect way for your loved ones to receive the care, supervision and social interaction they need while you get the time you need to work or meet other family obligations.

If you’re on the fence about putting your loved ones in adult day care, consider these benefits:

  • NSC 062315A Sense of Purpose. One of the things that older people miss the most once they retire or become ill is a sense of purpose. They need a reason to get up in the morning! Spending day after day at home alone waiting for family or friends to come by can be isolating. Your loved one could be at risk of developing depression. Enrolling them in senior day care can restore a sense of purpose to their lives and give them a reason to be excited about getting up every day.
  • Providing Supervision. Many seniors are capable of staying in their own homes longer if they have periods of supervision. When they are home alone all the time they are more likely to have an accident. Getting out of the house and being in a supervised setting gives them a chance to remain independent longer.
  • tilapiaNutrition. Adult Day Care also benefits an individual’s nutrition. Many seniors end up not cooking nutritious meals for themselves because they don’t want to eat alone. Sometimes they just don’t want to make a full meal for themselves. In addition, they may not feel confident using the stove or cooking with heavy pots and pans. When your loved ones  attend adult day care, they are getting at least one nutritious meal each day and eating in the company of others.
  • Caring for the Caregiver. The time spent at an adult day services facility provides respite for you — the caregiver. Don’t feel bad about needing time for yourself. You can’t be the only support for your elderly loved ones, especially if you have a job or a family of your own. It’s ok to say that you need time for yourself. Senior day care can give you the freedom to work all day without having to worry about the safety of your loved ones. Senior day care also gives you the freedom to take care of any errands or other family obligations. Or, you can take a spa day to restore your own mental and physical health. Taking care of yourself is of the utmost importance to be at your best for your loved one.
  • l1 member computerMental Stimulation. Seniors need mental stimulation and often they don’t get enough. Activities, crafts, trips, and just being around other people can help your loved ones exercise their mental muscles. This helps them stay sharp and alert for longer periods of time. Studies have shown that seniors who don’t receive enough social interaction lose their mental faculties at a much faster rate than seniors who have strong social ties and get out of the house for activities and social occasions on a regular basis.

We know how you feel about leaving your senior loved one home alone.

Other families felt the same way. Once their loved one became a Member at Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services, they found it was the right choice.

3 Activities to Celebrate Earth Day

3 Activities to Celebrate Earth Day

By Mike Cooper

This year, Earth Day is this Friday, April 22. Since 1970 it is a day on which many people around the world will show support for environmental protection. There are events in many communities on that day and throughout the week. Unfortunately, many seniors are unable to get to these events; they may not have transportation or physically cannot participate. That does not mean they can’t be involved in their own way!

Here are 3 activities you can do with your senior loved one this week to help them celebrate Earth Day:

  1. Garden4Plant a garden. Think herb garden, or even a couple tomato plants. An herb garden would be perfect for indoors and could easily be transplanted outside next month. If you are handy, you could build a small, raised planter box where your loved one could comfortably sit or stand to help plant the garden. Not only are the herbs and vegetables good for them, they will appreciate being involved. It doesn’t get any more ‘local’ than that!
  2. Recycle. Think about all the items in your own home that you haven’t used in years. Now think about all the things in your parents’ home that they haven’t used for decades! Why wait for something to happen to them before you go through some of these items with them? At that point, the process will be a lot more stressful because you will have suffered a loss and some things might wind up in the garbage instead of being donated or sold. Pick a closet, drawer or corner of a basement so you can go through these things with them a little at a time. Let them tell a story about the item, if there is one. Then determine if the item should be given to someone in the family, donated or sold.
  3. sapling-730683_640Plant a tree. This might not be something your senior loved ones can do themselves, but they can still be involved. Find out what their favorite tree is (hopefully something that grows well in your zone). If they still live in their own home, find a spot to plant a tree, even a little one, where they can see it. Maybe they could help water it from time to time. They can take pride in seeing something grow and live on for a long time and know that they were involved with it. If they live in a community where you cannot do this, maybe you can plant their tree by your house. When they come over to see you, point out the tree they that picked out – their ‘favorite’ tree.

GardenWe have a raised garden at Naperville Senior Center where our Members help to plant, water, pick and eat the wonderful vegetables we grow. We began planting April 1st, and on April 18th we had some impressive growth. We will transplant to the other side of the window in a couple weeks.

When they are not gardening, our Members socialize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, visualize, exercise, have fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.
