Top Right – Honor Flight; Top Left – Current

As we celebrate Veterans Day, I am reminded of the stories my dad would tell about his time in the US Navy in the Atlantic during World War II. He joined the Navy at the age of 18 in November 1942, and served from July 1943 to January 1946 on the USS Philadelphia, one of two ships that supplied firepower to cover Allied landings at Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, and the south of France.

One harrowing story had to do with a stormy night when he was on deck. The winds were whipping and the sea was in turmoil. Luckily my dad saw a huge wave coming over the side of the ship and he grabbed a cable and hung on for dear life. He was literally sideways as the wind and water tried to pull him away! But luckily for us, he hung on tight and has had another seven decades with us.

If you know a veteran, especially those from WWII or another foreign conflict, here are a few things you can do to capture their stories while they are alive:

  • If they are willing to talk about their time in the service, listen to and document their stories. You may need to ask a few leading questions.
  • If they don’t quite remember, take out any memorabilia from their time in the service. Those items may bring back memories that they forgot.
  • Take these stories and create a short book with them that you can give to other family members or close friends. Even if they heard these stories over the years, it might be nice for them to have something they can go back to after your loved one passes away.

We shouldn’t wait for Veterans Day to thank a vet for his or her service to this country. We continue to be a free country because of their dedication to this land. But especially on this day, make sure you thank every veteran you come across for their service and remember those vets who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

All of these veterans deserve our respect and gratitude. At Naperville Senior Center, all of our Members are treated with dignity and respect.

Take Time for You

Take Time for You

Take Time for You

By Mike Cooper

As we approach Thanksgiving, signs of the season are all around us. Pumpkins smashed in the roads, groceries overflowing with turkeys and cranberries, kids riding their bikes through the leaves piled up on the street, and e-newsletters gushing with gratitude. Frankly, we should be grateful for things all year long, not just in November.

We have said it before, but we’ll say it again – as Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services continues to grow, we are grateful for the support of our family, friends and colleagues. We are most grateful for our dozens of Members and their families, who committed to improving their quality of life.
The next 8 weeks will be jammed with activities as we enter the holiday season. This is the ‘short list’ of events to keep in mind:

  • maple-leaves-62799_640Enjoy the fall foliage
  • Take down Halloween decorations
  • Veterans Day – thank a vet for their service
  • Turkey Trot 5k
  • Thanksgiving – give thanks
  • Black Friday – start (or continue) Christmas shopping
  • Cyber Monday – more Christmas shopping
  • Giving Tuesday – give to others who need it more
  • Put up Christmas (or Hanukkah/Kwanzaa) decorations
  • Hanukkah
  • Shovel the driveway (hopefully not!)
  • Start of winterchristmas-bauble-15738_640
  • Shovel the driveway, again (hopefully not!)
  • Christmas
  • Kwanzaa
  • New Year’s Eve – resolutions!

It is easy to get caught up in all of the hustle and bustle, and suddenly find yourself stressed out because there is so much to do. But remember to take time for yourself. Relax. Take a breath. Go for a massage; do some yoga. Get a mani/pedi, or just meditate for a little while. If the garland isn’t perfect, that’s okay.

Talk like a pirate dayWhile you are busy getting ready for these events – and taking time for yourself, your loved one could be safely with us celebrating as well! Let us take that one stressor away from you. We enjoy a variety of activities every day providing mental and physical stimulation for our Members. If there’s a holiday around the corner, we celebrate! (Did you see our ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’ photo?)

Are You Aware?

Are You Aware?

Are You Aware?

By Mike Cooper

There are many myths out there about senior citizens and many facts that you might not know about them. As National Awareness Month comes to a close, we want you to be aware of three more facts about senior citizens regarding voting, technology and falls.

  • Voting: Are you aware the majority of senior citizens are registered voters? It is not only that they might have more time to vote (and it doesn’t take that much time, by the way), but this group of citizens also has a strong commitment to their country. Sixty-one percent of citizens over age 65 vote compared to only 21% of citizens from 18 to 25 years old. We should all take a lesson from this group and do our civic duty when called upon to vote! Also, many of the seniors not voting, do indeed want to vote but are unable to get to the polls. Call to action: During the next election, be a good neighbor and check with the seniors on your block to see if they need a ride.
  • l1 member computerTechnology: Are you aware 15 million Facebook users are 65 years old or older? More than 40% of seniors are active online, whether connecting with family and friends on social media, playing online games, reading news, shopping and more! Some seniors are reluctant to learn this technology, but it is getting easier and easier for them to learn and use; keep trying! Call to action: Set up a Facebook page for a senior in your family. Don’t take, “I don’t have time to mess with a computer,” for an answer. Seniors have lots of time. Help them become “Friends” with everyone in the family. Show them how to check out everyone’s photos. They will catch on fast and finally start using the computer; spending less time staring at the TV.
  • Falls: Are you aware, according to the CDC, 2-1/2 million seniors are treated in emergency rooms for falls each year? This can be caused by a variety of issues including some medications that make a senior unstable, poor vision, lower body weakness, even home hazards such as throw rugs or uneven steps. Call to action: Throw out all the throw rugs (all of them) and keep an eye on your loved one, watching for signs they are becoming unstable or are having a hard time seeing where they are going. By correcting one problem, you may be preventing another one!

Naperville Senior Center is a great place for seniors to get news, learn about technology, and prevent falls by keeping their bodies strong with exercise! We have helped some of our Members learn about computer apps so they can communicate online with family members who live out of the country. It is rewarding to see their excitement as they hear about their family member’s new adventures! In addition to computer time, we encourage exercise, games and puzzles, singing, clapping, dancing, socialization and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.

Is Your Loved One Getting Scammed?

Is Your Loved One Getting Scammed?

Is Your Loved One Getting Scammed?

By Mike Cooper

Would you know if your mom or dad (or grandmother or grandfather) was being scammed? Wouldn’t they say something to you before they transferred large sums of money to a complete stranger over the phone? You would think so, but that is not always the case. During National Awareness Month, we want you to be aware of some facts about elder financial abuse.

despair-513529_640A recent study showed that about 1 in 20 seniors said they have been financially abused.  If a medical condition struck that many people, it would be considered a crisis! Many seniors are getting scammed by unscrupulous callers claiming to be with the government or other official authority. Sometimes they are hit by scammers claiming they won big prize or sweepstakes money.

Here are 3 ways to keep your loved one safe from elder financial abuse:

  • Talk to your loved one about scams. There are certain scams that we have heard about before: a friend or loved one suddenly in another country and has been hurt or arrested and needs money right away; you’re the ‘big winner’ in a sweepstakes, but taxes need to be paid upfront; the IRS (or other government agency) is called because you owe money and if you don’t pay now you could go to jail.

My Dad, 91 and still golfing, got a call from a scam artist claiming to be a grandson. “Grampy, I’m safe, but the car I’m in got pulled over by the cops. The driver had some drugs on his body and there was a gun in the glove box. Can you send money so I can post bail?” My crafty ole man asked the young perp if he could tell him the names of his oldest daughter’s children; the bad guy hung up. “I might be old… but I’m not stupid,” exclaimed Dad.

Make sure you talk to your loved one about these scams multiple times so they remember them. Assure them that if there is an issue with a family member, someone from the family will talk to them about it, not a stranger over the phone!

  • Help your loved one pay their bills. Between online billing and banking, it is easy to help your loved one pay their bills without having to sit with them to look at statements and write out checks. If you (or a trusted family member or friend) Senior care assistant reading bookcan see transactions as they happen, you have a better chance of stopping a payment to scammers.
  • Visit your loved one or make sure they socialize with others. Seniors who are alone make great targets for scammers. The more isolated they are, the more they will potentially believe a scammer’s story and go along with it. If your senior can socialize with others, the will be less isolated, more confident and less likely to believe a scammer.

There are a few sites you can visit to get more information about scams or to report a scam:

  • AARP has a scams and fraud page that provides information on the latest frauds against the older people: member.aarp.org/money/scams-fraud.
  • Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Office of Financial Protection for Older Americans will investigate consumer fraud complaints: consumerfinance.gov/older-americans.
  • Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force – to report a scam and a resource center for seniors and their loved ones about scams: stopfraud.gov/report.html.

Naperville Senior Center is a great place for seniors to come and definitely not get scammed! Our Members socialize with other seniors eliminating that isolated-at-home-alone feeling. Members are welcome to be as independent as they can safely be while they are with us. In addition to socialization, we encourage exercise, games and puzzles, singing, clapping, dancing, computer time and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.

3 Facts About Senior Citizens

3 Facts About Senior Citizens

3 Facts About Senior Citizens

By Mike Cooper

As we celebrate National Awareness Month, we realize there are many things people aren’t aware of with respect to older adults. Some facts and figures are surprising; by 2019, seniors will comprise 27% of our population.*

Here are 3 facts about senior citizens you might not know:

  • Senior isolation increases the risk of mortality.**

In adults aged 52 and older, both social isolation and loneliness are associated with a higher risk of mortality. One possible explanation: “People who live alone or lack social contacts may be at increased risk of death if acute symptoms

Cardio Exercise

Cardio Exercise

develop, because there is less of a support network to prompt medical attention.” Efforts to reduce isolation, including attending adult day service programs, are key to addressing the issue of mortality.

  • Seniors who are physically active are less likely to have cognitive decline.

What can you do to help? If they are able, get a senior walking – even just a little bit. Start with short distances; take the long route through the dining room from the bathroom back to the sofa. It is likely they will gain endurance over time and will walk farther without extra effort.

  • DSC_0388Seniors who have more social interactions are less likely to have cognitive decline.

What can you do to help? If you know a senior, visit with them once-in-a-while; play a game, do a puzzle, bring a meal, take a walk. Better yet, have them participate in adult day service programs where they can make new friends, share stories with peers, play games and have fun.

Our Members are welcome to be as independent as they can safely be while they are with us. In addition to socialization, we encourage exercise, games and puzzles, singing, clapping, dancing and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.
