3 Ways You Can be Healthy and Happy in Your Senior Years

By Mike Cooper

Health and happiness – sounds like a great way to spend your senior years. Do you envision your senior years sitting on a boat with a drink in your hand in a warm weather climate? Or in a cabin with a cup of steaming cocoa with a great book watching a pristine snowfall? Whatever your vision, I’m sure it is not one with sickness and misery. No one wishes that for themselves.

What is your plan to achieve that goal? Health and happiness doesn’t just happen (at least not for most of us). You have to work at it throughout your life.

On National Senior Citizens Day, we want to share 3 ways you can be healthy and happy in your senior years:

  • dollar-551932_1280Check your finances. You’ve heard the old saying, “Money can’t buy happiness,” but it can buy things – and we all need some things. It is never too early to create financial goals based on your needs and wants. There are many financial planners that can help you with those goals. You can stress less as you grow older knowing that you can live the lifestyle you want once you retire.
  • Check your health. It costs a lot more to be unhealthy that it does to be healthy – doctor’s visits, prescriptions, co-pays, time off of work, etc. If you start taking care of your health at a young age, you may be able to reduce some of the negative effects of getting older such as arthritis, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke and even dementia. We have talked about healthy nutrition and exercise in prior blogs (such as https://www.napervilleseniorcenter.com/snacking-can-be-healthy/ or grandma-612016_640 senior citizenhttps://www.napervilleseniorcenter.com/5-ways-to-stay-healthy-mentally-and-physically/). These habits need to be started at an early age so you keep you don’t have to play ‘catch up’ when it comes to your health!
  • Check your network. Who will help you if something happens to you? Your wife, kids, other family or friends? A lot of this depends on where you are living in your senior years in relationship to people you know. Do you want to live near family or do you want to be somewhere exotic (or just warm)? These things should be taken into consideration as you age.

happy member, senior citizenWhether or not you are near family or friends in your senior years, you can count on Naperville Senior Center to be your “home away from home” when you need it. We treat all of our Members like family (sometimes better than family)! We can help you or your loved one keep physically and mentally active without breaking the bank.

When we hear our Members say they look forward to coming each day, we know we are doing our best. Each week there is something new, different and interesting for them to do or learn; we want our Members to grow!

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

Keep Christ in Christmas

Keep Christ in Christmas

Keep Christ in Christmas

With only a few days left before Christmas, the stores are bustling, cookies are baked, and friends and family are gathering for various holiday festivities. We sometimes get so caught up in the frenzy of the holiday that we forget why we are celebrating in the first place – the birth of Christ.

ChristmasMagnetBefore all the presents are opened and the food is gone, remember to do some good for others as He would have done:

  • Be generous.
  • Be considerate.
  • Keep the driveway and sidewalk clear of snow for an elderly neighbor (if/when we get snow again).
  • Get the family together to clean out all the closets and dressers. Donate usable clothing, shoes, blankets and other items to a program for needy families.
  • Wish people you meet a good day and a MERRY Christmas!
  • Sing Christmas carols at nursing homes, hospitals or Senior Centers!
  • Send a Christmas card to someone you have not seen or talked to in years.
  • Invite a friend or neighbor who will be alone to share your Christmas celebration.

On behalf of myself, Pam and everyone here at Naperville Senior Center, we wish you and your family a joyous Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

Honoring Heroes

Honoring Heroes

Honoring Heroes

By Mike Cooper

DSC01197

Tree of Life

December 7, 1941: A date which will live in infamy. These words were spoken by President Roosevelt a day after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, which brought the United States into World War II. We remember all the souls lost that day 76 years ago; those who tried to fight off the invasion of Japanese bombers.

There were many heroes in World War II and other conflicts since then. We shouldn’t just honor and remember them on specific days throughout the year – Memorial Day, Veterans Day – but every day.

Let’s not forget the other heroes among us – policemen, firemen, doctors and nurses. They rush in to help others when most of us would instinctively run away.

But there are many other people who could be considered a hero, if only by one or two other people.

  • Who is your hero?

A person who shovels the walk for the older neighbor; not to make a buck or two, but because it is the right thing to do.

  • Someone who raises money to help a local family who was displaced from their home because of a fire.
  • The stranger who lets you in front of them at the grocery store when you only have a gallon of milk and they have a cart full of food.

To most of the world, these things may be insignificant, but to the person being helped it’s everything.

Who do you consider to be a hero?

We should always honor the heroes in the military who defend our freedoms, but let’s not forget the local heroes who do something out of the kindness of their heart and don’t ask for anything in return. Everyone can use a little help at one time or another. We should pay it forward as much as we can.

We honor all of our Members at Naperville Senior Center. Our goal is to help them continue to be as independent as they can safely be while they are with us. We encourage socialization, exercises, Wii Bowling, games and puzzles, singing and clapping, dancing, and a brand new shuffleboard to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.

Come Visit: to learn more about how NSC can provide a respite for caregivers and a great social environment for your loved one, contact us at 630.857.3017. We invite you to Come Visit and see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

Learning: The Brain’s Version of Jumping Jacks

Learning: The Brain’s Version of Jumping Jacks

Learning: The Brain’s Version of Jumping Jacks

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, which a general term for memory loss and the loss of other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Mental decline is mostly due to altered connections in brain cells; keeping the brain active may help to generate new brain cells and increase the brain’s vitality. It’s the brain’s version of jumping jacks!

It’s never too late to learn something new

The old saying – It’s never too late to learn something new – is true! But it is more than that; it is about continually learning throughout your life. Studies have shown that a lower level of education may be related to a higher risk of Alzheimer’s later in life, due to less mental stimulation throughout a lifetime. Those people who have a higher level of education may be somewhat more protected from Alzheimer’s, possibly because the brain cells and their connections are stronger. More educated people can, and do, still get Alzheimer’s, but the symptoms may appear later.

Try to learn something new every day

Regardless of how old you are, you should continue to learn and stimulate your mind. That doesn’t mean having to get a PhD! Here are 5 simple things you can do to keep your brain active and healthy:

  1. man-863744_1280Put down the remote and read a book. Whether you like romance novels, history or fiction, reading is a great way to stimulate your mind. If you don’t want to spend the money to buy a book (or e-book), get a book from your local library.
  2. Take a class. Do you want to learn how to paint, speak a foreign language, or play bridge? There are many adult education classes available at your local park district, community college or adult education center. Find something that you want to learn how to do and do it!
  3. Old hands solving jigsaw puzzlePlay games. Do you like to play Scrabble, Monopoly, Bunco or Battleship? Keep playing! Learning can be disguised as fun! Remember, every Wednesday at 5pm, we play BINGO at our facility.
  4. Do crossword, Sudoku or regular puzzles. Whether you are a master at the New York Times crossword puzzle or just like the scenic puzzle that you found at a garage sale, they challenge you to think and keep your mind active.
  5. DSC_0406Garden. Yes, even when you are gardening you are learning something, which stimulates your brain. So throw on those gloves and plant some veggies and flowers!

At Naperville Senior Center, we incorporate games, puzzles, education, gardening and a host of other activities into our daily routine with our Members. We strive to provide them with mental stimulus to keep them active, engaged and included.

Contact us to get schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.

3 Powerful Benefits of Mailing Letters to Seniors Right Now

3 Powerful Benefits of Mailing Letters to Seniors Right Now

3 Powerful Benefits of Mailing Letters to Seniors Right Now

When was the last time you mailed a letter or a card to someone? We are not talking about sending text messages or an e-mail, but an actual card in the mail?  It may have been a while, which is a shame.  I remember looking forward to getting cards in the mail for holidays or special occasions.  Now it’s a Facebook post or a text.  Don’t get me wrong, those are great!  But many seniors are not online or if they are, they would still appreciate an old-fashioned snail-mail once-in-a-while.

senior activities, letters

Send a letter to a senior today! Even if it is just to say ‘hello, I’m thinking of you!’

I know that actual greeting cards can be expensive; prices seem to keep going up with everything these days. But why not get a package of stationary to send a note just to say you care or pick up a box of blank cards where you can put in the sentiment?  If you have kids, take out the construction paper and crayons or markers and let them make a homemade card.

Here are 3 powerful benefits of mailing letters to seniors:

  • Improves Mood. Who isn’t happy knowing that someone is thinking about them? Your loved one goes to the mailbox and sees something in there other than bills or catalogs. Already that improves their mood! Then they read your note and they are in an even better mood!
  • Increases Sensory Stimulation. Not only can a loved one read your handwriting in a letter, they can feel it. It is not just type-written text on a screen. There are more senses in use when a letter or card is mailed versus an online greeting. Increased sensory stimulation is used as a therapy to help older adults with dementia; why not let your loved one have the added benefit with the experience.
  • It’s a Win-Win. Your loved one will be happy to get something from you, but you will feel good you sent it. An online greeting still conveys a sentiment, but why not go the extra step once-in-a-while. It only takes a couple minutes to put something in the mail. The better you feel about the experience, the more you are going to want to do it, and the positive cycle continues!

At Naperville Senior Center we provide sensory stimulation to our Members every day. Some of our Members have communicated with their grandchildren across the world from our computer station, and we recently swapped notes with the children over at Bright Horizons on ‘letter day.’ Very rewarding watching our Members smile as the read the notes.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.
