6 Things You Need To Know About Naperville Senior Center
Over the last two and a half years, Pam and I could not be happier with the reception we have received from our family, friends and the community regarding Naperville Senior Center. We couldn’t have gotten this far without your support!
But there are some people who may not have heard about us or may still have a few with questions about Naperville Senior Center.
Here are 6 things you need to know about Naperville Senior Center:
Who will actually care for my loved one?

Staff caring for a Member
Your loved one is in good hands! Currently, the Center has at least one staff member for every three Members; as we grow our ratio will be one staff to six Members. NSC’s team includes a Licensed Physical Therapist, a pool of Registered Nurses that rotate days, a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, as well as other staff members and caring volunteers. We will also have a full-time receptionist to round out our team.
Do you provide health care?
Along with our Registered Physical Therapist and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, Naperville Senior Center staff includes a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor of Science in

Purposeful activities: making Christmas decorations
Nursing degree who oversees medication administration and monitors our Members’ health status on an ongoing basis. The nurse coordinates care with families and other service providers and serves as a resource to family caregivers. Everyone on our team assists Members with activities of daily living such as toileting, incontinence care, ambulation, transferring, etc.
Does my loved one have to be there every day?
To ensure our Members obtain the “socialization” aspect of our program, we believe a 2-day per week minimum participation is necessary. We anticipate about two-thirds of our Members will attend all day, five days a week.
What will my loved one do there during the day?
Naperville Senior Center provides fulfilling activities including exercise, education, health, nutrition, music, recreation, craft projects and community involvement opportunities. This is NOT babysitting! These activities encourage learning, participation and maximization of existing skills. Each member can be as involved in these activities as they want to be!

Community Involvement: our “Mini Relay For Life” raised over $5,000 in 2017 to fight cancer.
For the third year, our Members participated in a Mini Relay for Life in June and raised over $5,000 for American Cancer Society’s fight for a cure. In August, we all watched the eclipse. We celebrate birthdays with decorations and birthday cake!
Will food be provided?

Getting ready for lunchtime…
Yes. We provide the same kinds of food we eat at home, using real plates and silverware. Our hot, delicious noon-time meal entrées include grilled chicken, lasagna, pot roast, tilapia, roast pork, chicken parmigiana and more, each served with veggies, a salad and soup of the day. We have a continental style breakfast and provide healthy snacks throughout the day. The food choices are overseen by a registered dietician, who will make sure that our food is nutritious, as well as tasting great!
What else should we know?
We want Naperville Senior Center to be your loved one’s “Home Away From Home” during the day. We are dedicated to making sure they maintain their dignity while in our care. In addition to having a full shower, we have a hair care station so members can feel good about their personal grooming. We also have a washer and dryer to quickly deal with unexpected spills. This not only helps your loved one feel better about him/herself, but it helps the caregiver as well.

Plant a tree. This might not be something your senior loved ones can do themselves, but they can still be involved. Find out what their favorite tree is (hopefully something that grows well in your zone). If they still live in their own home, find a spot to plant a tree, even a little one, where they can see it. Maybe they could help water it from time to time. They can take pride in seeing something grow and live on for a long time, knowing that they were involved with its growth. If they live in a community where you cannot do this, maybe you can plant their tree by your house. When they come over to see you, point out the tree they that picked out – their ‘favorite’ tree.

Can you believe it was just one year ago, on St. Patrick’s Day 2015, when we had our first ribbon cutting after opening our doors on February 25? We have had many successes since then! We are excited to have our 1st Anniversary Party and Business After Hours again on St. Patrick’s Day 2016 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm!
Our charter Member, Charlene, started with us the week after we opened. We love having her here; she continues to brighten our days with every visit!
We hosted a mini Walk for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society in June, and raised over $2,400 to fight cancer. We want to be sure our Members continue to exercise – and being able to do it for an important cause was a great motivator!
We provided fun activities for our Members including planting a garden (and then enjoying the fruits and vegetables of their labor), dressing up on Talk Like a Pirate Day, and having children come by before Halloween to get treats and play games with our Members.
We have hosted several Continuing Education (CEU) Workshops after hours for nurses, therapists and social workers. We are happy to provide this amazing venue for the community when they need to come together to gather and learn. Do you need a space to hold your workshop? Give Mike a call at 630-857-3017.
We hosted our 1st Annual Fall Craft and Vendor Fair in November. Thank you to all 23 vendors who joined us for a wonderful event. Our Members were even involved in making most of our crafts that were sold that day.
We hosted our own ‘Oscar’s Day Awards’ with our Members just before the Academy Awards! Our competition was fierce, but we outstanding performances!
There is a lot of hoopla surrounding the Big Game this Sunday. It’s the 50th Super Bowl; it’s the biggest age difference between opposing quarterbacks in the Big Game; and it could very well be the last game of a future hall-of-fame quarterback.
