5 Ways Fun and Games Can Make Your Brain Healthy

5 Ways Fun and Games Can Make Your Brain Healthy

5 Ways Fun and Games Can Make Your Brain Healthy

By Mike Cooper

You are actually helping keep your brain healthy just by reading this blog! In a study done by Mayo Clinic of 2,000 men and women 70 and older, they found those who were on the computer at least once a week were 44 percent less likely to develop memory or thinking problems. When those same participants engaged in other activities, they were almost 25 percent less likely to develop those problems. Even participants who did crafts or played games saw a decrease in memory problems.

This shows us that it is important to keep the mind active as we age. Training our brain doesn’t have to be tedious; it can be accomplished by having fun! How can you keep your, or your loved ones, brain healthy?

Here are 5 ways fun and games can make your brain healthy:

  • Play a Computer Game. Whether it is on a laptop, tablet or smartphone, there are plenty of games available for you or your senior loved one to play. Do they like Scrabble? Have them play Words with Friends. Do they like old-time video games? They might like Angry Birds. Do they want to keep in touch with their grandchildren? Set them up with a Facebook (or other social media) account. Let them Skype or Facetime with family who live far away.
  • Play a Dice Game. Bunco is very popular here at Naperville Senior Center. It is a social dice game involving brain healthy100% luck and no skill (there are no decisions to be made), Everyone can pick up the dice and toss ‘em. Our Director of Fun keeps the pace flowing and the members throwing. “What’s the name of the game, Ray?” “BUNCO!” Prizes for all.
  • Put a Puzzle Together. Do you take each piece, one at a time, and try to get it in the general area you think it should go? Or are you an ‘outside first’ type of puzzle maker? Either way, you have to put some thought into the colors and shape of the piece. Depending on the size of the puzzle, it can take a short while or a couple days.
  • Play Cards. Anyone for Gin Rummy? Garbage? Bridge? Or a simple game of Slap Jack? Your loved one has probably played them all over the years. With each game you have to remember the rules, what cards have been thrown down, and sometimes what your partner has done. Even if you need a little refresher course (which you can get on the internet – see first way to have fun!) you could be playing together quickly.
  • Color. This is no longer a childish activity. Research shows coloring decreases agitation and anxiety. Possibly because the participant is concentrating they may ‘forget’ their troubles and become more relaxed. Members at NSC love to color and it has become a daily activity.senior activities

Our Members have fun every day!

At Naperville Senior Center we have all of these activities available for our Members every day. Some of our Members have even communicated with their grandchildren across the world from our computer station. There are opportunities to colorize, harmonize, hypothesize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, socialize, exercise, have fun, and plenty of activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.

Benefits of Adult Day Services Facilities

Benefits of Adult Day Services Facilities

Benefits of Adult Day Services Facilities

By Mary Hoskins, RN

Have you thought about adult day care for your loved ones? Adult day care can be the perfect way for your loved ones to receive the care, supervision and social interaction they need while you get the time you need to work or meet other family obligations.

If you’re on the fence about putting your loved ones in adult day care, consider these benefits:

  • NSC 062315A Sense of Purpose. One of the things that older people miss the most once they retire or become ill is a sense of purpose. They need a reason to get up in the morning! Spending day after day at home alone waiting for family or friends to come by can be isolating. Your loved one could be at risk of developing depression. Enrolling them in senior day care can restore a sense of purpose to their lives and give them a reason to be excited about getting up every day.
  • Providing Supervision. Many seniors are capable of staying in their own homes longer if they have periods of supervision. When they are home alone all the time they are more likely to have an accident. Getting out of the house and being in a supervised setting gives them a chance to remain independent longer.
  • tilapiaNutrition. Adult Day Care also benefits an individual’s nutrition. Many seniors end up not cooking nutritious meals for themselves because they don’t want to eat alone. Sometimes they just don’t want to make a full meal for themselves. In addition, they may not feel confident using the stove or cooking with heavy pots and pans. When your loved ones  attend adult day care, they are getting at least one nutritious meal each day and eating in the company of others.
  • Caring for the Caregiver. The time spent at an adult day services facility provides respite for you — the caregiver. Don’t feel bad about needing time for yourself. You can’t be the only support for your elderly loved ones, especially if you have a job or a family of your own. It’s ok to say that you need time for yourself. Senior day care can give you the freedom to work all day without having to worry about the safety of your loved ones. Senior day care also gives you the freedom to take care of any errands or other family obligations. Or, you can take a spa day to restore your own mental and physical health. Taking care of yourself is of the utmost importance to be at your best for your loved one.
  • l1 member computerMental Stimulation. Seniors need mental stimulation and often they don’t get enough. Activities, crafts, trips, and just being around other people can help your loved ones exercise their mental muscles. This helps them stay sharp and alert for longer periods of time. Studies have shown that seniors who don’t receive enough social interaction lose their mental faculties at a much faster rate than seniors who have strong social ties and get out of the house for activities and social occasions on a regular basis.

We know how you feel about leaving your senior loved one home alone.

Other families felt the same way. Once their loved one became a Member at Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services, they found it was the right choice.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.

3 Ways You Can be Healthy and Happy in Your Senior Years

3 Ways You Can be Healthy and Happy in Your Senior Years

3 Ways You Can be Healthy and Happy in Your Senior Years

By Mike Cooper

Health and happiness – sounds like a great way to spend your senior years. Do you envision your senior years sitting on a boat with a drink in your hand in a warm weather climate? Or in a cabin with a cup of steaming cocoa with a great book watching a pristine snowfall? Whatever your vision, I’m sure it is not one with sickness and misery. No one wishes that for themselves.

What is your plan to achieve that goal? Health and happiness doesn’t just happen (at least not for most of us). You have to work at it throughout your life.

On National Senior Citizens Day, we want to share 3 ways you can be healthy and happy in your senior years:

  • dollar-551932_1280Check your finances. You’ve heard the old saying, “Money can’t buy happiness,” but it can buy things – and we all need some things. It is never too early to create financial goals based on your needs and wants. There are many financial planners that can help you with those goals. You can stress less as you grow older knowing that you can live the lifestyle you want once you retire.
  • Check your health. It costs a lot more to be unhealthy that it does to be healthy – doctor’s visits, prescriptions, co-pays, time off of work, etc. If you start taking care of your health at a young age, you may be able to reduce some of the negative effects of getting older such as arthritis, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke and even dementia. We have talked about healthy nutrition and exercise in prior blogs (such as https://www.napervilleseniorcenter.com/snacking-can-be-healthy/ or grandma-612016_640 senior citizenhttps://www.napervilleseniorcenter.com/5-ways-to-stay-healthy-mentally-and-physically/). These habits need to be started at an early age so you keep you don’t have to play ‘catch up’ when it comes to your health!
  • Check your network. Who will help you if something happens to you? Your wife, kids, other family or friends? A lot of this depends on where you are living in your senior years in relationship to people you know. Do you want to live near family or do you want to be somewhere exotic (or just warm)? These things should be taken into consideration as you age.

happy member, senior citizenWhether or not you are near family or friends in your senior years, you can count on Naperville Senior Center to be your “home away from home” when you need it. We treat all of our Members like family (sometimes better than family)! We can help you or your loved one keep physically and mentally active without breaking the bank.

When we hear our Members say they look forward to coming each day, we know we are doing our best. Each week there is something new, different and interesting for them to do or learn; we want our Members to grow!

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

Learning: The Brain’s Version of Jumping Jacks

Learning: The Brain’s Version of Jumping Jacks

Learning: The Brain’s Version of Jumping Jacks

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, which a general term for memory loss and the loss of other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Mental decline is mostly due to altered connections in brain cells; keeping the brain active may help to generate new brain cells and increase the brain’s vitality. It’s the brain’s version of jumping jacks!

It’s never too late to learn something new

The old saying – It’s never too late to learn something new – is true! But it is more than that; it is about continually learning throughout your life. Studies have shown that a lower level of education may be related to a higher risk of Alzheimer’s later in life, due to less mental stimulation throughout a lifetime. Those people who have a higher level of education may be somewhat more protected from Alzheimer’s, possibly because the brain cells and their connections are stronger. More educated people can, and do, still get Alzheimer’s, but the symptoms may appear later.

Try to learn something new every day

Regardless of how old you are, you should continue to learn and stimulate your mind. That doesn’t mean having to get a PhD! Here are 5 simple things you can do to keep your brain active and healthy:

  1. man-863744_1280Put down the remote and read a book. Whether you like romance novels, history or fiction, reading is a great way to stimulate your mind. If you don’t want to spend the money to buy a book (or e-book), get a book from your local library.
  2. Take a class. Do you want to learn how to paint, speak a foreign language, or play bridge? There are many adult education classes available at your local park district, community college or adult education center. Find something that you want to learn how to do and do it!
  3. Old hands solving jigsaw puzzlePlay games. Do you like to play Scrabble, Monopoly, Bunco or Battleship? Keep playing! Learning can be disguised as fun! Remember, every Wednesday at 5pm, we play BINGO at our facility.
  4. Do crossword, Sudoku or regular puzzles. Whether you are a master at the New York Times crossword puzzle or just like the scenic puzzle that you found at a garage sale, they challenge you to think and keep your mind active.
  5. DSC_0406Garden. Yes, even when you are gardening you are learning something, which stimulates your brain. So throw on those gloves and plant some veggies and flowers!

At Naperville Senior Center, we incorporate games, puzzles, education, gardening and a host of other activities into our daily routine with our Members. We strive to provide them with mental stimulus to keep them active, engaged and included.

Contact us to get schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.

5 Activities To Keep The Body and Mind Healthy

5 Activities To Keep The Body and Mind Healthy

5 Activities To Keep The Body and Mind Healthy

Why do some older adults feel good and stay active into their senior years, but others age much more rapidly? There are a variety of factors that contribute to a senior’s well-being such as physical activity, cognitive function, and social interaction.

Many studies show the correlation between physical activity and increased mental cognition. It is important to use the body and mind in order to keep both from weakening as we age. What you do in your younger years to strengthen your body and mind will affect how you feel as you age. Think about what you can do to increase those chances.

But what about a loved one who is already in their senior years? At any age, there are activities that are healthy for the body and mind; keeping the brain active, involving social interaction and body and mind healthyhaving fun!

Here are 5 activities that can keep your body and mind healthy:

  1. Walking: a brisk 30-minute walk strengthens your heart and burns calories. Physical activity can also help increase mental cognition.
  2. Story Telling: seniors who use their imaginations instead of trying to use their memory can improve their mood, communication and social interactions.
  3. Arts & Crafts: more seniors are discovering the rewards of finding a new hobby or rediscovering a pleasurable craft from their past.
  4. Games: whether card or board games, crossword or jigsaw puzzles, playing games may help prevent dementia by exercising one’s mind.
  5. Gardening: Planting flowers and veggies in a raised flower bed is a purposeful activity. Watching the flowers grow and eating the veggies provides a sense of accomplishment.

Keep your body and mind healthy!

Whether you are a boomer or a millennial, keeping your mind and body healthy should be something you work on regularly. There are plenty of activities for all ages and levels of physical or mental capacity. You just have to start!

Regardless of our Members’ physical or mental capacity, they are able to socialize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, visualize, exercise, have fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation. We incorporate exercise, games and music into our daily activities with our Members.

3 Powerful Benefits of Mailing Letters to Seniors Right Now

3 Powerful Benefits of Mailing Letters to Seniors Right Now

3 Powerful Benefits of Mailing Letters to Seniors Right Now

When was the last time you mailed a letter or a card to someone? We are not talking about sending text messages or an e-mail, but an actual card in the mail?  It may have been a while, which is a shame.  I remember looking forward to getting cards in the mail for holidays or special occasions.  Now it’s a Facebook post or a text.  Don’t get me wrong, those are great!  But many seniors are not online or if they are, they would still appreciate an old-fashioned snail-mail once-in-a-while.

senior activities, letters

Send a letter to a senior today! Even if it is just to say ‘hello, I’m thinking of you!’

I know that actual greeting cards can be expensive; prices seem to keep going up with everything these days. But why not get a package of stationary to send a note just to say you care or pick up a box of blank cards where you can put in the sentiment?  If you have kids, take out the construction paper and crayons or markers and let them make a homemade card.

Here are 3 powerful benefits of mailing letters to seniors:

  • Improves Mood. Who isn’t happy knowing that someone is thinking about them? Your loved one goes to the mailbox and sees something in there other than bills or catalogs. Already that improves their mood! Then they read your note and they are in an even better mood!
  • Increases Sensory Stimulation. Not only can a loved one read your handwriting in a letter, they can feel it. It is not just type-written text on a screen. There are more senses in use when a letter or card is mailed versus an online greeting. Increased sensory stimulation is used as a therapy to help older adults with dementia; why not let your loved one have the added benefit with the experience.
  • It’s a Win-Win. Your loved one will be happy to get something from you, but you will feel good you sent it. An online greeting still conveys a sentiment, but why not go the extra step once-in-a-while. It only takes a couple minutes to put something in the mail. The better you feel about the experience, the more you are going to want to do it, and the positive cycle continues!

At Naperville Senior Center we provide sensory stimulation to our Members every day. Some of our Members have communicated with their grandchildren across the world from our computer station, and we recently swapped notes with the children over at Bright Horizons on ‘letter day.’ Very rewarding watching our Members smile as the read the notes.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.
