Seniors Can Participate in the Naperville “Relay For Life” Cancer Event at the New Adult Day Services Facility in Naperville

Naperville, IL (June 2, 2015) — Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services, has teamed up with the American Cancer Society and is stepping their way to a world with less cancer and more birthdays! Throughout the third week of June, NSC Members and Guests will fund-raise money by walking and wheeling around the Exercise & Fitness Center’s walking track during the Mini Relay For Life!

Many of their Members will be participating in a community activity for the first time in years.Maureen2

“This is a great opportunity for our elderly loved ones to participate in community activities, as well as raise money for this very worthwhile cause” states Samantha Kuderna, American Cancer Society’s Community Manager, Relay For Life.

The membership-based Center, designed for Naperville area adult residents unable to safely stay home alone, is located at 1504 N. Naper Boulevard, at the corner of Naper and Ogden Avenue. NSC offers outlets for physical exercise and activities, social opportunities, computer workstations, the Mini Relay For Life walking track, personal grooming services, delicious hot noon-time meals, and a quiet room complete with books and magazines.

“Our goal is to help Members age in place, promote dignity, and provide motivation to get up in the morning,” explains Mike Cooper, Business Director of Naperville Senior Center.

The mission statement of the Center is to provide “quality care and day service to older adults, including those with special needs and disabilities.” Additionally, they aim to “maintain or improve the functional skills of every Member to promote personal independence and overall well-being.”

“We developed Naperville Senior Center as a local resource to provide our Members an alternative to institutional living, and to promote and extend personal independence,” notes Pam Cooper, Executive Director of the Naperville Senior Center, and a licensed Physical Therapist.

This is not the usual adult day services facility. This is more like a fitness and activity center. Pam, along with Theresa Capone, Director of Fun, and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, have over 55 years of geriatric rehabilitation experience, ensure the activities and exercises performed by Members are safe and purposeful.

With its qualified team of therapists, an RN (halftime), business manager, and volunteers, plus its delightful facilities and amenities, the 4,056 square feet Naperville Senior Center truly lives up to its motto as a “Home Away From Home.”gOALtHERM6-2

Naperville Senior Center’s special introductory deal offers a Free Trial for future members and their caretaker. “Please come visit the Center and meet the staff”, Mr. Cooper says, “Once you see this beautiful facility and experience the ‘Naperville Senior Center Experience,’ you will want to become a member.”

“I was very excited when Coop approached me with this idea at a Naperville Chamber event. His personal experience with cancer as well as his passion for this new facility were a perfect match for our fundraising efforts,” said Kuderna.

Top 4 Exercises for Older Adults

Exercises for older adults

At any age, exercise is important part of a healthy life. But it is even more important as adults get older. Even with all of the studies showing that consistent physical activity can help enhance longevity and quality of life, over 85% of adults are either not regularly active or not active at all!

Exercises for older adults can help prevent heart disease and osteoporosis, among other diseases. According to research from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, physical activity, including exercise, can slow the changes in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Adults who exercised 5 times a week did better on cognitive tests and had less age-related changes to the brain that are associated with Alzheimer’s!

  1. Cardio – this includes activities like walking, swimming, biking, or just doing housework. Any activity that increases your heart rate for an extended period of time can improve your heart health and help you lose weight by increasing your metabolism.
  2. Strength – build muscle and increase your metabolism by lifting light weights.
  3. Balance – can help prevent falls and other accidents by building leg muscles and making older adults more stable on their feet.

    Walking the track

  4. Stretching –stretching allows you to increase your flexibility and improve your freedom of movement. This will help you stay more independent in your senior years.

(*Remember, you should always talk with your physician before starting any exercise regimen.)

The Crosstown Classic: What Side of the Fence are YOU on?

The Crosstown Classic: What Side of the Fence are YOU on?

The Crosstown Classic: What Side of the Fence are YOU on?

It’s that time of the year again when the lines are drawn; you see families divided and friendships put to the test. No, I’m not talking about politics. No, I’m not even talking about a family reunion, an event my brother Billy calls, “Forced Family Fun.” But rather the Crosstown Classic between the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox.

Crosstown-Classic-Wrigley-Field-Chicago-Cubs-300Most people who grew up in Chicago have picked a side; some more staunchly than others. At times babies were simply born into a side…your family was for either the Cubs or Sox and so were you. That’s just the way it went.

But how and when did this rivalry start? And how have the two teams fared since?

Here are 4 facts you may not know about this crosstown rivalry:
  • The rivalry between these teams started back in 1900 when Charles Comiskey moved his minor league team from Saint Paul to Chicago. The Cubs’ owner at the time actually filed suit against Comiskey, which was later dropped after certain demands were met.
  • Prior to interleague play beginning in 1997, the last time the Cubs and Sox played against each other where it counted towards the team standings was in the 1906 World Series, in which the Sox won in 6 games. In between that time, these two teams played in a variety of charity or exhibition games, but not one that ‘counted,’ except for bragging rights.
  • Since 1997, the Cubs and Sox have played each other 6 times each season, two three-game series played in each stadium. This year, however, there is only one four-game series, but there will still be 2 games played in each stadium.
  • Crosstown-Classic-baseball-1222404_640-300Although the Sox have the overwhelming winning record for the Crosstown Classic with a record of 10-4-5, the overall game record for the Classic is more evenly split with the Cubs winning 49 games and the Sox winning 55.

Do you want to get to a day game once-in-a-while but can’t take your senior loved one with you and don’t want to leave him or her at home? Naperville Senior Center is the perfect answer for you to get some respite. Our Members play baseball on the Wii and we will sometimes watch Cubs or Sox day games.

When they are not playing Wii games, our Members socialize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, visualize, exercise, have fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Go Cubs!

Honoring Lost Lives On This Wonderful Memorial Day

Honoring Lost Lives On This Wonderful Memorial Day

Honoring Lost Lives On This Wonderful Memorial Day

Memorial day-Mike Playing Taps-300wMemorial Day was originally referred to as Decoration Day. It came about in the years following the Civil War as a way to remember those who lost their lives in battle. The first Decoration Day took place in May of 1868. It wasn’t until 1971 that Memorial Day became a federal holiday, taking place on the last Monday in May, to honor the men and women who died while serving in the military.

Everyone at Naperville Senior Center would like to thank all of the brave soldiers, and their families, who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country free. But we also want to remember and thank all of the veterans who made it home safely, as well as those soldiers currently serving in the military who may find themselves in harm’s way, and their families. Their sacrifices to this country are no less important.

At Naperville Senior Center, we have several veterans in our midst. Some of our Members’ husbands are also veterans. In fact, both Pam and Mike’s dads were also in the Navy. Wow!

memorial-Day-20151109_102559_300wAccording to the Veteran’s Administration, there are only about 3% of the World War II veterans still living with approximately 348 dying every day. At this rate, all of the World War II vets will be gone in less than 5 years. As the phrase has been coined, this is the Greatest Generation, and there is so much we can learn from them and the soldiers that came after them.

If you get the opportunity, thank a veteran, young or old, for their service. Ask them if they would tell you a little something about their time in the military. (Some vets may not want to talk about it.) You may learn a little something about history that you cannot find in a book. If you go to a cemetery to honor your own loved one(s) and you see a military headstone, take a moment to say a prayer or just have a moment of silence in remembrance of that soldier.

At Naperville Senior Center we are honored to have veterans as Members and family. We love to hear the stories they tell. If they are not telling stories, our Members have plenty of opportunity to socialize, colorize, harmonize, hypothesize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, exercise, have fun, and plenty of activities providing mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.
