6 Things You Need To Know About Naperville Senior Center

By Mike Cooper

Naperville senior citizen center had a wicked awesome Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Celebration with SO many of you attending to wish us well and help us celebrate. Pam and I could not be happier with the reception we have received from our family, friends and the community.

I know there are still a few of you with questions about Naperville Senior Center, so I want to share some insights below:

  1. Who will actually care for my loved one?

Your loved one is in good hands! The center has at least one staff member for every six participants. NSC’s team includes a Licensed Physical Therapist, a Registered Nurse, and a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, as well as other staff members and caring volunteers.

  1. Do you provide health care?

Along with our Registered Physical Therapist and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, Naperville Senior Citizen Center staff includes a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree who oversees medication administration and monitors the participants’ health status on an ongoing basis. The nurse coordinates care with the family and other service providers and serves as a resource to family caregivers. All of our staff assists Members with activities of daily living such as toileting, incontinence care, ambulation, transferring, etc.

  1. Does my loved one have to be there every day?

To ensure our Members obtain the “socialization” aspect of our program, we believe a 2-day per week l1 member computerminimum participation is necessary. We anticipate about two-thirds of our Members will attend all day, five days a week.

  1. What will my loved one do there during the day?

Naperville Senior Center provides fulfilling activities including exercise, education, health, nutrition, music, recreation, craft projects and community involvement opportunities. This is NOT babysitting! These activities encourage learning, participation and maximization of existing skills. Each member can be as involved in these activities as they want to be!

  1. Will food be provided?Meal

Yes. We provide the same kinds of food that we eat at home, using real plates and silverware. Our hot, delicious noon-time meal entrées include grilled chicken, lasagna, pork roast and more, each served with veggies, a salad and soup of the day. We have a continental style breakfast and provide healthy snacks throughout the day. The food choices are overseen by a registered dietician, who will make sure that our food is nutritious, as well as tasting great!

  1. What else should we know?

We want Naperville Senior Center to be your loved one’s Home Away From Home during the day. We are dedicated to making sure they maintain their dignity while in our care. In addition to having a full shoshower-hair-care-laundrywer, we have a hair care station so members can feel good about their personal grooming. We also have a washer and dryer to quickly deal with unexpected spills. This not only helps your loved one feel better about him/herself, but it helps the caregiver as well.

3 Ways You Can Communicate with Your Senior Loved One

3 Ways You Can Communicate with Your Senior Loved One

3 Ways You Can Communicate with Your Senior Loved One

When was the last time you picked up a pen and put it to paper to write a letter? Or a thank you note? Or even to sign a birthday or get well card? For many people, it may have been a while.

I notice the number of Christmas cards we receive each year seems to dwindle as the years go on. Some people just want to put a general ‘Merry Christmas’ greeting on Facebook and let that be enough. They may think that with all the updates they provide to people throughout the year there isn’t the need to communicate further with an end-of-the-year newsletter or other greeting. “Who has time to buy cards and stamps, and address envelopes (or print labels)? It’s a hassle. Who cares, anyway?”

A lot of people care. With the flood of posts on various social media platforms, there is an over-abundance of information we see each day. That doesn’t mean we should abandon social media. It is certainly here for the long haul. In fact, you are probably reading this blog because of social media! But we shouldn’t forget about other forms of communication, both personally and professionally.

For instance, what about the people in your life who are not on social media? Your aunt or grandma or cousin may not be part of social media or even the internet at all. (The horror!) How do you keep in touch with those people? Maybe you don’t. You may see them once or twice a year at a family event. Or you leave it to someone else to inform them of what you have been doing.

With that said, not all seniors are strictly ‘offline.’ In fact, 80% of baby boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) are internet users. If you were born in 1964 you would not want someone to call you a senior anyway! But what about those older adults who were born prior to 1946? There are less of them online, although some of them are. Those are the seniors that you may need to reach out to periodically in ways that we don’t think about anymore, like writing a letter.

With National Letter Writing Week coming to a close, why not pick up a pen and communicate with someone you know who you don’t keep in contact with online by writing them a letter. “Dear grandma, hope to hear you are doing well. Here are how things are going with me…” Your grandma might love getting a note like that in the mail!

Here are 3 ways you can communicate with your senior loved ones who are not online:

  • Write to them. Buy some stationary and every once in a while send them a not just to say ‘hello’ and ‘hope you are doing well.’ They will be happy to know that someone is thinking about them. And otherwise they may just get bills or catalogs in the mail. There are plenty of programs available giving you the ability to print your own card. That is a great option as well.
  • Call them. In addition to writing to your loved ones, pick up the phone and call them. Yes, put the phone to your ear (or put your ear bud in your ear) and actually call someone. Giving them a chance to talk to someone (especially if they are home alone) is a great way to help them break up their day. And then you can share in more detail the things that are going on in your life. You don’t have to make it a long conversation (“grandma, I have a few minutes and just wanted to call to say ‘hi’) but they will appreciate the effort.
  • See them. If your loved one lives in the area, take the time to go see them once in a while. We all get caught up in our daily activities, thinking there is just no way we could add another activity to our busy schedules. But if you really think about it, you could squeeze in a couple hours in an evening or over the weekend to go see your loved one now and again. Again, it doesn’t have to be an all-day visit. Even a short visit to catch up would be welcomed!

Every day we strive to provide a safe, inviting environment for our Members so they can feel like this is indeed their home away from home. We want them to be as comfortable here as they are in their own home. We have taught many of our Members how to use a computer in our computer center. Some of them even communicate with their loved ones who live far away through the internet!

When our Members are not ‘surfing the web,’ they might be socializing, vocalizing, improvising, rhythmizing, harmonizing, exercising, have fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: to learn more about how NSC can provide a respite for you and a great social environment for your loved one, contact our Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, Theresa, at 630.857.3017. You can also schedule a tour to see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

3 Ways to Show Your Appreciation to Senior Citizens

3 Ways to Show Your Appreciation to Senior Citizens

3 Ways to Show Your Appreciation to Senior Citizens

Olympic-Games-senior-citizensIn 2015 there were 47.8 million senior citizens (65 and above) living in the United States.

That is about 15 percent of the population. By 2050 that number is expected to be close to 90 million people over 65 years old – and that is just in the United States! In Naperville, 19% of the population is 65 and above. In just a few years, there will be 20,000 senior citizens in our town. We wanted to take the time to write a few words about ways we can show our appreciation for the senior citizens in our lives.

Knowing this, there will be even more need for senior services as baby boomers age, their children get older, and we all live longer than ever. Boom. Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services is in prime position of being ready to serve an ever-growing number of seniors who cannot safely stay at home. Like I always say, “I am looking forward to becoming my own Member!”

Since World Kindness Day was just yesterday, November 13th, we want to suggest three ways you can show your appreciation to senior loved ones, friends and neighbors

  • Help with cutting the grass, landscaping or shoveling snow. Is there a senior neighbor on your block that uses an old push mower? Or does their grass always seem to be high? Why not take your mower down there and cut it for them. Do the landscape beds need to be weeded or bushes trimmed? Lend a hand and do it for them. When you see snow pile up on their stoop, walkway or driveway, shovel it for them. Ask a neighbor or two to join you and get the job done even faster. It’s only an hour or two out of your day and your senior neighbor will be very grateful.
  • Say ‘Thank You.’ Did a senior citizen you know serve in World War II, or the Korean or Vietnam wars? Did they teach, volunteercelebrating-pink-senior-citizens, raise kids or do something to make the community a better place? Why not say ‘thank you’ to them, just to make them feel like they are still appreciated. Bring a pretty bunch of flowers to brighten their day. Or make a hot meal for them. ‘Thank you’ is so easy to say and it costs very little. Try it out, you might just feel good too!
  • Listen to their stories. Is there an old guy always at the barber shop when you go telling a story from days gone by? Or a woman at church that remembers the good old days? Take the time to listen to them and ask more questions. For these seniors, their stories may be the most important things to them. It helps them stay connected to the ones they love who may have already passed away. Some senior citizens may have difficulty remembering current things, but they have vivid recollection of what happened in the past. So instead of dismissing these stories as irrelevant to you, buy them a cup of coffee and a donut, and ask them to tell you a story!

We love listening to the stories our Members tell us, and I find that listening to stories makes me feel even more appreciation. We have learned so much from them! One Member was a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer. Another was a groundskeeper at Wrigley Field for over 30 years. When Members are not story-telling, they spend time socializing, verbalizing, improvising, evangelizing, visualizing, exercising, having fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

One final thought: you do not have to be at someone’s wake to mention, “The world is a better place because of your parent!”

Show Senior Citizens your appreciation.  You’ll be glad you did.

Adult Day Services: How can they help you?

Adult Day Services: How can they help you?

Adult Day Services: How can they help you?

Introduction – Senior Day Program Near Me / Senior living

Adult Day Service centers provide social activities and health care services for frail adults or adults with physical disabilities. People who attend an Adult Day Service center live at home or in the home of a family/caregiver. Centers usually open early and stay open late during the week to help working caregivers. Adult Day Services can improve the quality of life of those who attend and help each person function at their best. Adult Day Services cost less than in-home care and the intensity of therapeutic activities and social contact is also greater. Plus, studies show that caregivers using adult day services feel less depressed and more confident in their role as caregiver. Naperville Senior Center: First Impressions

Naperville Senior Center: First Impressions

Naperville Senior Center: First Impressions

By Mike Cooper

 Naperville, IL Senior Center

Now that we have a week under our belts, I can sit back and really see what we have created – and it’s wicked awesome!

a receptionWhen you arrive at Naperville Senior Center, you are warmly greeted by our receptionist or one of our other staff members. Each Member or guest is escorted through a double secure gateway to our dining area. This security is important to keep all our Members safe while they are visiting us.

Just past the dining area, our main room will be used for games, crafts, r main roomWii programs, exercise, meals and music, just to name a few things our Members can do during the day. Since it is a large room, there will be multiple activities in progress at the same time. We also have a computer center with three stations so our Members can keep in touch with family and friends as well as learn a little more about the internet and all it has to offer.

m quiet roomOff in the back corner is our ‘quiet’ room. We know that seniors sometimes need to take a break during the day. There are recliners and a couch in this room for our Members to take a nap or just rest quietly. The walls are sound-proofed, so the activities in the main room won’t disrupt those in the quiet room.

On the other side of the main activity room are the restrooms and shower facility. There are times when older adults come home from a rehab facility to a house that only has a second floor shower that they cannot easily access. We want to give our Members the opportunity to take a shower if they cannot do so elsewhere. (By the way, our whole facility is 100% handicap accessible, so there are never issues with anyone getting around.)f break room

Then there is our sweet break room. We prepare our meals each day with seniors’ nutrition in mind; giving our Members a hot, nutritious lunch, as well as healthy snacks throughout the day. We want our Members to experience that ‘home away from home’ feeling all day long while they are with us.

The last couple areas of Naperville IL Senior Center are offices for staff, as well as a mop room complete with a state of the art soap dispensing system and a full-size, stacked washer dryer to ensure any type of accident or spill can be dealt with quickly.

Contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, Home Away From Home.
