4 Activities to Celebrate Earth Day with your Senior Loved One

4 Activities to Celebrate Earth Day with your Senior Loved One

4 Activities to Celebrate Earth Day with your Senior Loved One

This year, Earth Day is Saturday, April 22. Since 1970 it is a day on which many people around the world will show support for environmental protection. There are events in many communities on that day and throughout the week. Unfortunately, many seniors are unable to get to these events; they may not have transportation or physically cannot participate. But that that does not mean they can’t be involved in their own way!

Here are 4 activities you can do with your senior loved one this week to help them celebrate Earth Day:

  1. Celebrate Earth Day

Our Members help plant our garden in the spring and enjoy the fruits of their labor throughout the summer!

Plant a garden. Who doesn’t love fresh-picked produce?! Think herb garden, or maybe a couple tomato plants. An herb garden would be perfect for indoors and could easily be transplanted outside next month. If you are handy, you could build a small, raised planter box where your loved one could comfortably sit or stand to help plant the garden. Not only are the herbs and vegetables good for them, they will appreciate being involved. Farm to table would be about 10 feet. It doesn’t get any more ‘local’ than that!

  2. Recycle. Think about all the items in your own home that you haven’t used in years. Now think about all the things in your parents’ home that they haven’t used for decades! Why wait for something to happen to them before you go through some of these items with them? At that point, the process will be a lot more stressful because you will have suffered a loss and some things might wind up in the garbage instead of being donated or sold.

Don’t try to tackle the whole house at once; it can be too overwhelming. Pick a closet, drawer or corner of a basement and go through these things with them a little at a time. Give them the chance to tell a story about the item, if there is one. Then determine if the item should be given to someone in the family, donated or sold. If there are old family photos, see if your loved one remembers who is in the picture, when it was taken or the reason for it. Save that information somewhere and scan the picture(s) so they are safe digitally.

  1. Plant a tree. This might not be something your senior loved ones can do themselves, but they can still be involved. Find out what their favorite tree is (hopefully something that grows well in your zone). If they still live in their own home, find a spot to plant a tree, even a little one, where they can see it. Maybe they could help water it from time to time. They can take pride in seeing something grow and live on for a long time, knowing that they were involved with its growth. If they live in a community where you cannot do this, maybe you can plant their tree by your house. When they come over to see you, point out the tree they that picked out – their ‘favorite’ tree.
  2. Celebrate earth day

    Spring flowers are in bloom!

Take a walk. Especially this spring, the trees and flowers are in full bloom and the weather has been warm. Get your loved one outdoors to enjoy the beautiful scenery. If they can only go a short distance, walk down their street to see the tulips and daffodils that are in front of their neighbors’ houses. If they can go walk farther, check out the beautiful scenery in your town or neighboring towns.

In the Naperville area, the flowers and trees along the Riverwalk and in the Morton Arboretum are in full bloom. There are plenty of trails, parks and preserves in the area to walk and enjoy the sights.

The last 2 years we have had our own raised garden where our Members help to plant, water, pick and eat the wonderful vegetables we grow. We are looking forward to having that garden again! Our farm to table distance is only about 20 feet!

When they are not gardening, our Members socialize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, visualize, exercise, have fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

6 Ways to Help a Depressed Loved One

6 Ways to Help a Depressed Loved One

6 Ways to Help a Depressed Loved One

setting boundaries, depression, world health dayApril 7 is World Health Day. The theme for World Health Day 2017 is Depression: Let’s Talk. Although depression is not a normal part of aging, it can be common among older adults. Even though the CDC estimates that approximately 7 million seniors in America suffer some type of depression each year, most seniors are happy with their lives.

Depression tends to be more common in people who have other health conditions. According to the CDC, 80 percent of older adults have at least one chronic health condition and 50 percent have two or more, such as heart disease or cancer. That puts seniors at a greater risk of having depression.

Depression goes beyond ‘feeling blue’ or having an ‘off’ day. We all experience sad feelings at times! For someone who is clinically depressed, they cannot just snap out of it. It may occur when there is a significant change in an older adult’s life – the death of a loved one, moving away from family or friends, or a serious illness. However, the symptoms of depression may go beyond being sad.

depression, world health dayOther symptoms of depression include:

  • Being more tired than usual
  • Restless sleep or having a hard time falling asleep
  • Being irritable
  • Confusion
  • Lack of attention

Some of these symptoms, like confusion or lack of attention, may look like Alzheimer’s, even though the person does not have that disease. If the person is on medication, especially multiple types of medication, there could be side effects that contribute to depression. These are things that should be discussed with a medical professional.

What can you do to help an older loved one who you think may be depressed?

Here are 6 things you can do:

  • Healthy Happy, depression, world health dayInvite your loved one out. Take them out for a meal, a visit to a park, or to your house to see the grandkids. Get them out of their home where they are alone and into another environment where they can interact with other people.
  • Schedule social activities. Does your loved one have friends or other family members in the area? Do they like to do things at the ‘Y?’ Schedule activities for your loved. If you cannot always take them places, see if someone else can take them to an activity. Many communities have senior transportation available. Again, having more social interaction is important for seniors.
  • Make healthy meals for them. Eating healthy meals has positive benefits beyond your waistline. When you feel better physically, your mental and emotional state will benefit too. Your loved one may not want to cook for themselves, so they resort to frozen or other packaged foods. Even though the package may say they are healthy, they are filled with preservatives. If you can cook for your loved one and package that food so they simply have to thaw and reheat, you have created a win-win!
  • Review their prescriptions. Are they taking the correct doses at the right time of the day? Taking more or less medication than prescribed could have serious side effects.
  • Take them for a medical exam. If the symptoms of depression persist, a medical professional can do a thorough exam to determine the root cause of the symptoms. Once a diagnosis is made, make sure your loved one follows up with any treatment.
  • Adult Day Center, successBring them to Naperville Senior Center. At NSC, we provide the social interaction that seniors need. From gaming to exercising to singing and dancing, we let our Members express themselves throughout the day. We also provide a hot, healthy noon-time meal.

Each day our Members spend time socializing, verbalizing, improvising, evangelizing, visualizing, exercising, having fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

A Look Back to Gain Perspective

A Look Back to Gain Perspective

A Look Back to Gain Perspective

In the two years since we received our permit to begin construction on the Naperville Senior Center space so much has happened! It seems like just yesterday when Pam, Emily, Zach and I spent Christmas 2014 with our hardhats on looking at the drawings and realizing this was really going to happen!

With our two year anniversary coming up on February 25th, it is a good time to reflect on everything that has happened, while looking forward to a prosperous new year!

  • Olympic-Games-senior-citizens, regain controlOur charter Member, Charlene, started with us the week after we opened and she still brightens our day and provides us with lots of laughs with every visit.
  • We have had many Members join us in the last two years. On any given day we could have 10-25 Members enjoying games, crafts, exercise, singing, dancing and a hot noontime meal. We are grateful to have each and every one of them with us!
  • In June 2016 we hosted our second annual mini Walk for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society, and raised $4,590 to fight cancer. We want to be sure our Members continue to exercise, even if it is small steps, and being able to do it for an important cause was great motivation. Some of our Members’ families even joined in on the fun!
  • Our Members again planted a garden that thrived throughout the spring and summer months. We regularly served our bounty to our Members as part of a healthy, nutritious lunch. They literally were able to enjoy the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor!
  • We provided fun activities for our Members including pet therapy, dressing up on Talk Like a Pirate Day, and having children come by before Halloween for a costume parade and to get treats and play games with our Members.
  • Our Members enjoyed a variety of concerts throughout the year including a bagpipe concert on Bagpiper Appreciation Day, DJ Karl Knutson singing standards, and Christmas concerts from the Young Naperville Singers and The Samuel Edgar Band.
  • We have hosted several Continuing Education (CEU) Workshops after hours for nurses, therapists and social workers. We are happy to provide this amazing venue for the community when they need to come together to gather and learn. If you know of a group who needs a meeting or socializing space, let them know about Naperville Senior Center!
  • We hosted our 2nd Annual Fall Craft and Vendor Fair in October. Thank you to all the vendors and shoppers who joined us for a wonderful event. Our Members were even involved in making some of our crafts that were sold that day.
  • Along with our friends at Aurora Business United, we hosted a Business After Hours event with the Lisle Chamber of Commerce in August. We had a fantastic turnout; thank you to everyone who came to network, socialize and check out our facility.
  • We were also able to host two St. Elizabeth Seton Choir Christmas parties. The two dozen voices singing truly sounded like a choir of angels. This past Christmas, both of our children made it home and it was one of the best days of our lives!

It’s hard to believe we were able to fit so much into the last 12 months. We know 2017 will be even more amazing for us and our Members! Our hope is that everyone has a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

If you haven’t had a chance to join us at one of these events, just contact us to schedule a quick tour or a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.

What are Your Favorite Christmas Traditions?

What are Your Favorite Christmas Traditions?

What are Your Favorite Christmas Traditions?

As the song goes, “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.” With the snowfall we have received in the Chicagoland area over the last few weekends and now the frigid temperatures, it is the most wonderful time of the year! We are only a few days away from Christmas and this year both Cooper children will be home to celebrate with family and friends. To say Pam and I are excited is an understatement!

As the wake-ups count down and the house is more decorated, I can’t help but think back on some Christmas traditions that we have had and other popular ones. It is enjoyable to remember what Christmas traditions you had as a child, which of those traditions you imparted on your own children, and if they are old enough, which of those traditions they are teaching the next generation.

With Christmas almost here, I want to share a few popular Christmas traditions and some historical origins:

  • Christmas Traditions

    The Cooper Family Christmas Tree

Decorate a Christmas Tree. This year I got a $10 tree from ‘the Jewel’ just a couple days ago. I wasn’t sure what I’d get, but it turns out it is a great tree! Remember, never judge a book by its cover (or price tag). Did you know that decorating an evergreen tree was first introduced in Germany in the 17th century? When the first German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania in the 1820’s they brought the tradition with them and by the middle of the century almost every home in America had one.

  • Christmas Traditions

    Young Naperville Singers

Sing Christmas Carols. There are so many favorites – Oh Holy Night, Jingle Bells, Silent Night…the list could go on and on. What a peaceful way to spend Christmas – or the whole season! At Naperville Senior Center we hook up the 6-disc Christmas Karaoke every day and on Wednesday, the “Young Naperville Singers” featuring three of our Member’s grand-daughters will be performing right after lunch.

  • Christmas TraditionsGo to Midnight Mass. There’s something about the midnight Mass that is special. It’s dark and the lights in the church are shimmering. Many times there will be a special choir singing classic Christmas songs where everyone can join in and some special ones like the Hallelujah Chorus. When done well, you can get chills down your spine! Did you know that the tradition of the Midnight Mass began as far back as the early 400’s? Centuries ago, Midnight Mass might last for hours, to the point where church goers would have an early morning feast following the Mass! At our church, the Midnight Mass is at 10:00 pm.
  • Read Twas the Night Before Christmas. It’s a classic that can be read whether your kids are young or old. Everyone is ‘in the moment’ and focused on the words, rather than on presents, food or other distractions. Did you know that the poem was written in the early 1800’s? There is controversy over who actually wrote it. Many people believe it was penned by Clement Clarke Moore, but some believe it was written by Major Henry Livingston, Jr. Either way, it is said to be “the best-known verses ever written by an American.” If you would rather read something else, pull out Dr. Seuss’ “How The Grinch Stole Christmas.” Be sure to show everyone the pictures before you turn the page.
  • Christmas TraditionsContinue (or start) a family tradition. Every Christmas, the Coopers, and any overnight guests, settle into the family room, crank up the blaze in the fireplace and watch the Christmas movie, “Die Hard.” Hans and his merry band of misfits once again will be thwarted by Officer John McClain. Throughout the movie, someone will say the next line before the actor and all will crack up. “Shoot the glass.” “This is Agent Johnson. No, the other one.” “Glass? You got beat-up on National TV and you’re worried about glass?” “We’re going to need some more FBI guys.”

On Christmas morning, we also enjoy devouring Pam’s baked cookies and fruitcake, washed down by a Mimosa or two as we pass out the presents under the tree.

Here at NSC we are enjoying spending another Christmas season with our Members. The joy they have fills the room. We can’t imagine spending this festive season any other way!

Every day we strive to provide a festive, safe environment for our Members so they can feel like this is indeed their home away from home. We want them to be as comfortable here as they are in their own home. Our Members socialize, vocalize, improvise, rhythmize, harmonize, exercise, have fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: give the gift of Membership. Your loved one will be in a safe place, doing purposeful activities, and having fun. The caregiver will regain some time to focus on the family and career opportunities. Give me a call at 630.857.3017 to schedule a tour.

NSC Testimonial:

“My 90-year-old father has Parkinson’s and I work full time. I needed to take him somewhere where he would be safe, taken care of and enjoy going to. I found it at Naperville Senior Center. I can’t thank them enough for helping me. He absolutely loves it there – he does all kinds of activities, crafts, games, etc. He lights up when he knows he is going to go there. There are lots of people for him to talk to and make as friends. I can’t say enough about this facility. I highly recommend it. It has saved me and made my life bearable in so many ways.” ~ Member’s daughter, November 27, 2016

8 ways to regain control of your life

8 ways to regain control of your life

8 ways to regain control of your life

As we recognize National Family Caregiver Month, we are reminded that 75 percent of caregiving support for seniors is provided by a family member. That means about 44 million Americans care for family members or friends with conditions that keep them from managing basic daily tasks. These tasks may include bathing, preparing meals, managing medication, getting groceries, going to doctor’s appointments and more.

setting boundaries, life lessons, regain controlThese caregivers help their loved ones maintain a decent quality of life, without having to go to a nursing home or other facility. But the strain on caregivers can be great. According to AARP, the ‘typical’ caregiver is a middle-aged female who is married (or living with a partner) and works outside the home. It is likely that this caregiver also has children. So she is caring for her parents or other loved one, her spouse, her children and maintaining a job. That is a lot to ask of anyone!

Caregivers should not just be recognized during National Family Caregiver Month, but all year long for their selfless support of their loved ones. But recognition is not enough. In addition to the recognition they deserve, these caregivers need a break. It doesn’t matter whether that break is to recharge their own batteries, have more time with their family, or finish that big project at work. They just need time to do things that are important to them.

That is why Naperville Senior Center was created. We provide a “home away from home” for seniors, while providing respite for their caregivers.

So during National Family Caregiver Month, let’s not call it November, but YESvember! Here are 8 ways to regain control of your life:

For caregivers:

Say no to stress and anxiety                          Say YES to calm

Say no to lack of time for self-care              Say YES to spa day

Say no to worry                                               Say YES to peace of mind

Say no to lousy job productivity                   Say YES to the job promotion

Say no to not enough family time                Say YES to hanging with the family

Say no to feeling guilty                                  Say YES to being joyful and strong

Say no to poor quality of life                         Say YES to a work and family balanced life

Say no to fatigue                                              Say YES to increased energy

Olympic-Games-senior-citizens, regain controlCaregivers should not feel guilty leaving their loved ones at Naperville Senior Center. We truly are their “home away from home.” Our Members can socialize and make new friends, overcome obstacles, walk longer distances, improve hand eye coordination, increase muscle strength, increase endurance, and improve their quality of life!

For Future Members:

Say no to being lonely and loneliness          Say YES to friendships

Say no to empty house                                    Say YES to community of friends and family

Say no to waiting for someone to call          Say YES to looking forward to tomorrow

Say no to isolation                                           Say YES to inclusion

Say no to desperation                                     Say YES to hopefulness, calmness, and positivity

Say no to depression                                       Say YES to happiness, delight, and cheerfulness

Say no to nobody to speak to                        Say YES to a room full of people

Say no to boredom                                          Say YES to exciting activities

Each day our Members spend time socializing, verbalizing, improvising, evangelizing, visualizing, exercising, having fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.
