3 Way to be a Better Self-Caregiver

3 Way to be a Better Self-Caregiver

3 Way to be a Better Self-Caregiver

As any caregiver can tell you, care giving is more than just taking care of your loved one’s physical health. Truly giving care means providing emotional support, socialization, and intellectual stimulation. However, many caregivers often sacrifice their own self-care in order to ensure they are fully caring for others.

It makes sense. Being a caregiver can be hard work, so any sort of short-cut, even if it means cutting out self-care, can seem appealing. But sacrificing me-time can lead to dangerous levels of burnout—reducing focus and increasing fatigue. For this reason, it is important to always be a self-caregiver when caring for someone else.

To jump start your new role as a self-caregiver, here are three tips to make the most of your me-time:

  • meditation-caregiver-511563_300Practice Mindfulness: If your focus is always on other people, then it can be hard to get in touch with your own thoughts and feelings. To combat this, many caregivers are turning to mindfulness meditation for self care.  It’s easier than it sounds. Mindfulness is simply the practice of slowing down your day and focusing on how YOU feel. For instance, when was the last time you paid attention to what it feels like to take a nice walk? Whether it means focusing on parts of your day that you already enjoy or going on YouTube and finding a seated meditation, mindfulness is a positive way to reconnect and refresh.
  • Treat Yourself: Caregivers deserve a little pampering too! Though treating yourself may seem like a non-necessity, that candy bar or salon visit can actually have a big impact on your mood. Treating yourself every once-in-a-while can pull you out of your daily rut and remind you that your work as a caregiver is something worth celebrating. This reminder will boost your day-to-day positivity and confidence, making you well-rested enough to take on your care giving role.
  • sleeping-1159279_640Get Some Sleep: We all know what difference a good night’s sleep can make. From improving mood to improving health, those precious 8 hours do so much for our well-being. Unfortunately, caregivers have a lot on their minds and often lose sleep because of it. If you can, try putting aside your caregiver duties one-hour before you go to sleep. Set that time aside for winding down (away from the TV!) and preparing to go to bed. If that hour is not an option, a quick 20 minute nap in the day can serve as a quick self care fix. Bottom line: your body needs sleep so find time for it!

However you decide to be a better self-caregiver, the important thing is that you find respite in the day.  Everyone needs a break and a caregiver is no exception. That is one of the reasons Naperville Senior Center is in existence; to create a ‘home away from home’ for your senior loved one AND give the caregiver, you, time to yourself. Whether you need time to run errands, work in the garden, catch up on chores, be more productive at work, get to the gym, take a class or just take a nap, we provide a safe, fun environment for our Members.

Each day our Members spend time socializing, verbalizing, improvising, evangelizing, visualizing, exercising, having fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

5 Life Lessons for Caregivers of Seniors

5 Life Lessons for Caregivers of Seniors

5 Life Lessons for Caregivers of Seniors

There’s bad news and there’s good news. The bad news is that caring for an aging loved one has no guide book. The good news is that you are not alone and you certainly aren’t the first person to wonder how on earth you can fit all a caregiver does into 24 short hours each day.

While we don’t have all the answers, we can certainly provide some guidance. There are some life lessons you can take with you as you forge your way through your caregiving journey.

To start, here are five inspirational quotes for senior caregivers:

  1. setting boundaries, life lessons“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”-Aesop

Remember what you are doing has worth and value. Some days may be harder than others, but no matter what happens, your care makes your loved one rich in life.

  1. “Love begins by taking care of the closest ones—the ones at home”—Saint Theresa

Whether the senior you care for lives with you or lives across town, they are the closest to you. Caring for them sets a loving foundation in your life that others will surely notice (and even envy!).

  1. “Effective health care depends on self-care; this fact is currently heralded as if it were a discovery.”—Ivan Illivich

The idea of self care is often portrayed as a new-fangled luxury when in reality it’s just basic life management. You don’t need to buy a $40 bath bomb or go on a rare juice cleanse to take care of yourself—you just need to make sure your life is a healthy one. Eating right, sleeping well, and having patience with yourself are some of the best places to start.

  1. life lessons“You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind” –Joyce Meyer

Turn that frown upside-down! Take time throughout the day to laugh with your senior loved one and have fun together. This will make both of your lives full and happy!

  1. “Everything has been figured out, except how to live”—Jean-Pal Sartre

You are not a failure if you don’t have everything figured out and perfect; that just means you are human. Enjoy the fact that not everything has to (or even can) be exactly right. No one will hold it against you if you make a mistake or take a break.

Be kind, be patient, and be forgiving; these are the lessons that come up again and again for caregivers. Hopefully, these wise words can offer up some support as you attempt to balance all three. Overall, what’s important is the fact that you can absolutely be a good caregiver. So relax, enjoy what you’re doing, and listen to the wisdom around you!

Patience is by far the biggest challenge. I have seen both sides of the spectrum watching our Members and their families. It is all about attitude. Barking orders at your aging loved one actually increases everyone’s irritability. Patient caregivers, watching and carefully guiding their slow-moving spouse or parent to the car, have a very calming influence. Remember to treat everyone how you would like to be treated.

Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services is designed to give your senior loved one a ‘home away from home’ and give the caregiver, you, time to yourself. Whether you need time to be more productive at work, help your kids with their homework, get them to after-school activities or take time for yourself, we provide a safe, fun environment for our Members.

Each day our Members spend time socializing, verbalizing, improvising, evangelizing, visualizing, exercising, having fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Caregiver Respite: Are you thriving or just surviving?

Caregiver Respite: Are you thriving or just surviving?

Caregiver Respite: Are you thriving or just surviving?

The definition of surviving is “to continue to live or exist,” while thriving means “to grow or develop well, to prosper or flourish.” Which one of these definitions best describes you today?

For family members who are the primary caregiver for a loved one, you may have answered, ‘surviving,’ and you would not be alone. Being a caregiver AND being a spouse, parent, employee and friend can be challenging. How can you do it all?

Sometimes it becomes a Catch-22: if you spend time with your loved one, you feel like you are ignoring your family or job; if you spend time with your family or doing your job, you are ignoring your loved one. The stress can wear anyone down.

Here are 3 tips to thrive, not just survive, while being a caregiver for a senior loved one:

  • checklist-caregiver-respite-1275665_300Prioritize. Whether you prioritize your month, week or day (or all of the above), understand what the most important things are that need to be done. Work down your list, checking items off as you go. If someone else can help you finish a task, ask for their assistance. You don’t have to do everything yourself. Don’t sweat the small stuff.
  • Understand Your Emotions. How do you feel? Physically, emotionally, mentally. Being a caregiver is hard work on top of everything else you have to do. Does that make you sad, mad, frustrated or stressed? Understand why you feel how you do and work to change those feelings. By improving your emotional state, you can improve your physical and mental states as well. This will put you in a much better position to care for your loved one, yourself and your other family members.
  • yoga-caregiver-respite405507_300Have ‘Me’ Time. Whether you just go for an hour massage or yoga class, or get away for a day, take time to recharge your batteries. Make sure you put ‘me’ time towards the top of your priority list so it doesn’t get pushed to the side. No one will fault you for wanting to have a little time to yourself. Again, with a little time to yourself, you will be in a much better position to care for your loved one, yourself and your other family members.

Sometimes it is hard to thrive while being a caregiver when you have other responsibilities to your family, your career and yourself. That is one of the reasons Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services exists. We create a ‘home away from home’ for your senior loved one AND give the caregiver, you, time to yourself. Whether you need time to be more productive at work, help your kids with their homework, get them to after-school activities or take time for yourself, we provide a safe, fun environment for our Members.

Caregivers need time to focus on family and career

Caregivers need time to focus on family and career

Caregivers need time to focus on family and career

If you are a caregiver to a senior loved one, you know that you have to invest a lot of time to make sure you are taking care of their needs. Meals, hygiene, doctor’s appointments, other activities…someone has to make sure it all gets done. In a recent blog (https://www.napervilleseniorcenter.com/caregiver-respite-4-ways-make-time/) we talked about ways you can take time for yourself, whether it was getting to the gym, spa or out with friends.

But what about the rest of your family life and your work life? Have they been pushed to the back burner?

Focus on your family.  Whether it’s a ‘date night’ with your spouse/significant other or an activity with your kids, make time for them. Go to the zoo or museum as a family. Or get in a round of mini-golf or laser tag. Do something where you can connect as a family. Make sure your children know you are there for them, no matter what. Even though you want/need to spend time with their grandparent, that doesn’t mean you are not a phone call away – or can be home soon enough to help them with a problem.

kids-caregiver-family-1093758_640But this is also a time to teach your kids some independence.

  • Clothes. Let them pick out their clothes for school the next day. It’s all up to them.
  • Lunches. Maybe you buy the food for lunches, but everyone has a hand in packing their lunch bags. Make it a fun activity that everyone gets involved in.
  • Homework. Set a schedule with respect to when you will be available to help with that. Split it up between yourself and your spouse by subject or by day so everyone is working together.

Focus on your career.  According to AARP, sixty-one percent of caregivers who are 50 and over also have full-time jobs. At that age, you have spent significant time working on your career, whether you are moving up the corporate ladder, are an integral part of a small office or have your own business. Whether it is your passion or you do it simply because you need the money, you are working for a reason. You need to give your job – and the other people at the company – the attention they deserve. Stop putting the promotion off because you take care of Mom, go for it!

startup-caregiver-family-849805_1280There are many ways to make your life a little less stressful while you are working, including:

  • Ask if you can work from home periodically. Many companies will let their employees telecommute, depending on the type of position. You can save quite a bit of commuting time by being able to work from home, time that you can spend with your senior loved one, taking care of your family or yourself!
  • Change your work hours. Is your work day flexible? Can you start a little earlier or later so can better care for your loved one (and your family or yourself!)? Again, some companies have flex hours based on the needs of the employee.

As the old saying goes, ‘If you don’t ask, the answer is always ‘no’.’ So have a conversation with your employer to see what you can do so you can be fully productive but still have the time to be a caregiver. Be prepared with options on how you will increase your productivity. Many employers will surprise you as they may have the same situation in their own family.

It is hard being a caregiver when you have other responsibilities to your family, your career and yourself. That is one of the reasons Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services is designed for; to create a ‘home away from home’ for your senior loved one AND give the caregiver, you, time to yourself. Whether you need time to be more productive at work, help your kids with their homework, get them to after-school activities or take time for yourself, we provide a safe, fun environment for our Members.

Seniors Can Participate in the Naperville “Relay For Life” Cancer Event at the New Adult Day Services Facility in Naperville

Naperville, IL (June 2, 2015) — Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services, has teamed up with the American Cancer Society and is stepping their way to a world with less cancer and more birthdays! Throughout the third week of June, NSC Members and Guests will fund-raise money by walking and wheeling around the Exercise & Fitness Center’s walking track during the Mini Relay For Life!

Many of their Members will be participating in a community activity for the first time in years.Maureen2

“This is a great opportunity for our elderly loved ones to participate in community activities, as well as raise money for this very worthwhile cause” states Samantha Kuderna, American Cancer Society’s Community Manager, Relay For Life.

The membership-based Center, designed for Naperville area adult residents unable to safely stay home alone, is located at 1504 N. Naper Boulevard, at the corner of Naper and Ogden Avenue. NSC offers outlets for physical exercise and activities, social opportunities, computer workstations, the Mini Relay For Life walking track, personal grooming services, delicious hot noon-time meals, and a quiet room complete with books and magazines.

“Our goal is to help Members age in place, promote dignity, and provide motivation to get up in the morning,” explains Mike Cooper, Business Director of Naperville Senior Center.

The mission statement of the Center is to provide “quality care and day service to older adults, including those with special needs and disabilities.” Additionally, they aim to “maintain or improve the functional skills of every Member to promote personal independence and overall well-being.”

“We developed Naperville Senior Center as a local resource to provide our Members an alternative to institutional living, and to promote and extend personal independence,” notes Pam Cooper, Executive Director of the Naperville Senior Center, and a licensed Physical Therapist.

This is not the usual adult day services facility. This is more like a fitness and activity center. Pam, along with Theresa Capone, Director of Fun, and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, have over 55 years of geriatric rehabilitation experience, ensure the activities and exercises performed by Members are safe and purposeful.

With its qualified team of therapists, an RN (halftime), business manager, and volunteers, plus its delightful facilities and amenities, the 4,056 square feet Naperville Senior Center truly lives up to its motto as a “Home Away From Home.”gOALtHERM6-2

Naperville Senior Center’s special introductory deal offers a Free Trial for future members and their caretaker. “Please come visit the Center and meet the staff”, Mr. Cooper says, “Once you see this beautiful facility and experience the ‘Naperville Senior Center Experience,’ you will want to become a member.”

“I was very excited when Coop approached me with this idea at a Naperville Chamber event. His personal experience with cancer as well as his passion for this new facility were a perfect match for our fundraising efforts,” said Kuderna.
