5 Easter Traditions from Around the World

By Mike Cooper

As we celebrate Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter, we want to share 5 Easter traditions from around the world. Some of these are similar to things we do here in the U.S.; others are very unusual!

easter-707703_640When the kids were little in the Cooper household, we would hide the little plastic eggs filled with candy, goldfish, other treats and coins. The kids would start at the top of the stairs and Mike would video them as they ran down the steps to the room with the eggs. It was very fun watching their search tactics change as they grew older. However, we would only let them have a couple pieces of candy before Mass. There was no room for kids with too much sugar during the celebration of the Risen Lord!

What traditions do you have in your family or culture?

Here are 5 Easter Traditions from Around the World:

  1. SWEDEN: Easter is a very secular holiday in Sweden, celebrated with meals of eggs, herring, and something called ‘Jansson’s Temptation,’ which is made up of potato, onion and pickled sardines baked in a cream sauce. In the days leading up to Easter Sunday, children dress up as Easter witches while wearing old or used clothes. They go home to home in their neighborhoods, trading paintings or drawings for candy and treats – kind of like our Halloween, but there’s a trade for the candy!
  2. HAITI: In Haiti, Holy Week is celebrated with beautiful parades and traditional music played on bamboo trumpets, maracas, drums…even coffee cans if that is all they can find. The holiday is a little mixture of both Catholic and Voodoo traditions!
  3. ETHIOPIA: In Ethiopia, the first Easter service usually starts at 8 pm on Easter Saturday (similar to our Easter Vigil), but it lasts until 3 am Easter morning! Those who go to this service stay for the whole Mass and wear their Easter finest. After the service, people go home and have breakfast to celebrate with sourdough bread, which is traditionally cut by a priest or the head man of the family.
  4. lorca-711611_640SPAIN: There are many processions through the streets of towns in Spain at night to celebrate Easter. The ‘floats’ have decorated figures, covered in gold, silver or beautiful cloth, telling the Easter story. These floats are carried by 40 or 50 people through the procession, which can last 4 – 5 hours.
  5. UNITED KINGDOM: On a Sunday in the middle of Lent, the U.K. has a day called ‘Mothering Sunday,’ similar to our Mother’s Day. There are special church services and flowers are given to mothers to thank them for all they do.

Easter Celebration at NSC

This year we celebrated Easter early with our Members and the children from Bright Horizons for a fun multigenerational, multidenominational Easter activity. Everyone had a great time! Our Members also made spring wreaths this week, a symbol of renewal and rebirth.

When we are not celebrating, we encourage our Members to socialize, exercise, play games and puzzles, sing, clap, dance, spend time on the computer, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: to learn more about how NSC can provide a respite for you and a great social environment for your loved one, contact us at 630.857.3017. You can also schedule a tour to see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

3 Lessons Learned from March Madness

3 Lessons Learned from March Madness

3 Lessons Learned from March Madness

The NCAA Basketball Tournament, known as March Madness, is well underway with only four teams left – playing for the right to be in the championship game next week. While these four teams are some of the best college basketball teams in the country, this tournament has had its share of thrilling shots, suspense and upsets.

Here are 3 business/life lessons learned from this year’s tournament:

  • basketball-768713_640You always have a chance. That chance may be slim, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t show up and do the best you can. Remember David and Goliath; the odds makers probably didn’t give David very good odds either.
  • Don’t give up. It’s not over ‘til it’s over. There were several games in this tournament that were decided at, literally, the last second. You have to be continually present, focused and committed to what you are doing. You may not always win, but no one can tell you that you didn’t give it your all.
  • If you make it interesting, people will come. Unlike professional leagues (let’s not debate whether these college players are really professionals that happen to be in college), the NCAA Tournament is ‘one and done.’ Lose and you are done; win and you move on. No best out of 3, 5 or 7 games. Anyone can have a bad game – or a really good one – which is why this tournament draws millions of fans who watch the game in person, on television, computers or phone and more who have taken the time to fill out their brackets. Whatever you are doing, personally or professionally, make it interesting. Someone will be intrigued and will want to know what it is about.

At Naperville Senior Center we are passionate about what we do to give our Members the respect and independence they deserve. We want them to enjoy their time with us through socialization, activities, games and puzzles, exercise and even breaking bread together.

  • happy memberAt NSC, everyone has a chance; a chance to enjoy fun activities, do a little exercise and socialize with up to a dozen of their peers.
  • Our Members never give up. (Okay, some of them take a nap from time to time.) They realize they have certain limitations but they now look forward to their next visit.
  • Interesting activities recently at the Center: Pinot’s Palette conducted an art workshop, all Members received an ‘Oscar’ for their special talent, Bagpiper Tracey performed a recital, and a 134 pound dog came to visit twice.

When we hear our Members say they look forward to coming each day, we know we are doing our best. Each week there is something new, different and interesting for them to do or learn; we want our Members to grow!

Are Frozen Foods Good For You?

Are Frozen Foods Good For You?

Are Frozen Foods Good For You?

frozen foods, healthy foodsDo you eat as many vegetables in the winter as you do in the summer? Fresh vegetables tend to cost more when they are out of season – and a lot of them are out of season this time of the year. With winter upon us, we ask the question, “Are frozen foods good for you?” Specifically, are frozen vegetables good for you? There are many opinions about different types of vegetables, such as organic fresh, regular fresh, canned, frozen, etc. How do you know what to choose?

Here are some helpful tips about different types of vegetables:

  • Canned: The least nutritious of all veggies. They tend to lose a lot of nutrients during the preservation process before being canned. If you can stay away from canned vegetables, you’ll be better off.
  • Fresh (whether organic or not): Get fresh vegetables if they are in season. But unless they are locally sourced, they are probably picked before they are ripe since they have to travel days or more to their final destination. This produce will not have their full nutritional value, even if they look ripe on the outside.
  • Frozen: Frozen vegetables are usually picked at their ripeness, and quickly blanched to remove bacteria. Then they are flash-frozen to lock in that freshness. This produce has the most nutrient-rich vitamins and minerals. Keep in mind that the longer they sit in the freezer, the more those nutrients will begin to break down. So don’t let them sit forever! Be leery of frozen vegetables in sauces that can add a lot of fat and calories. Look for the plain frozen vegetables.

Make sure your loved ones get the nutrients they need

It is important to get in as many fruits and vegetables as you can each day (the guideline is 9 servings!). Whether fresh or frozen, you are getting the nutrients your body needs. If the produce you are looking for is not in season, you know it is coming from far away, or you just want the convenience, consider getting frozen. You’ll be happy you did.

We provide nutritious AND delicious meals for our members

Naperville Senior Center provides a hot, noontime meal and snacks for each of our Members. Our veggies, biscuits and ice cream arrive frozen. Our entrées arrive frozen and fully cooked. We heat them up in our convection oven and Members rave about the deliciousness of everything including pot roast, baked cod, chicken Kiev, meat loaf, chicken dumplings and more.

Dessert time is very popular with our Members. There are fruit cups, cookies and fresh fruit, but the frozen treats are preferred. In addition to great food, we encourage our Members to socialize, exercise, play games and puzzles, sing, clap, dance, spend time on the computer, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Presidential Facts You May Not Know

Presidential Facts You May Not Know

Presidential Facts You May Not Know

By Mike Cooper

There are many facts about our presidents that are widely known. But as we celebrate Presidents’ Day, we thought we’d share some facts about a few presidents that you may not know.

Did you know?

  • jb_nation_grant_1_mThomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia. He is the only president to have founded an institution of higher learning.
  • Andrew Johnson was drunk during his inauguration. He was noticeably drunk during his inauguration speech!
  • Ulysses S. Grant got a speeding ticket while riding a horse. He was going too fast down a Washington street! Go figure…
  • William Taft served as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after leaving office. He was the only cowboy-67630_640former president to serve as the head of two branches of government and later swore in two other presidents.
  • Woodrow Wilson is the highest educated president. He earned a Ph.D. in Political Science and History from Johns Hopkins University. No other president has a Ph.D.
  • Gerald Ford was a fashion model. He and his wife, Betty, both modeled earlier in their lives. President Ford even posed for the cover of Cosmopolitan in the 1940s!
  • Ronald Reagan was a stand-up comic. We all know he was an actor, but when that career was on the skids, he took a gig in Las Vegas as a stand-up comic for a few weeks.

At Naperville Senior Center, we look up facts about holidays, like Presidents’ Day, to share with our Members so they continue to learn and use their brain power. In addition to mental exercises, we encourage socialization, games and puzzles, singing, clapping, dancing, computer time and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.

Love is in the Air

Love is in the Air

Love is in the Air

By Mike Cooper

heart-598048_640As the song goes, “Love is in the air, in the whisper of the trees. Love is in the air, in the thunder of the sea.” As we close in on Valentine’s Day this Sunday, there are many things pink and red in stores, on television and in ads. Retailers want you to believe that your loved one will love you more with a card, candy, jewelry, or dinner out.

I’m not suggesting that you skip getting your loved ones those things (my sweetie may see one or more of those), but what can you do for others, even strangers, that would make their day?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Pay it forward. When you go through a drive-thru, pay for the person’s coffee or meal in the car behind you. You have no idea how a small gesture like that can brighten someone’s day. If they do it for the next car, you will have started a trend to brighten the day for a lot of people.
  • Shovel someone’s driveway. Whether an older person lives next to you or someone younger, shovel their drive when it snows just because. Right now the forecast calls for snow on Valentine’s Day; what better way to brighten someone’s day than clearing the snow for them.
  • Make a meal for someone who can’t get out. Do you know an older adult who doesn’t go out much (or at all) or just someone who is sick or struggling? Make a meal and deliver it to them. If you are delivering to an older adult, make sure to have clear instructions on it for reheating. A hot meal can really warm the spirit! Better yet, invite them over for dinner.
  • Make a call. Is there a relative or friend you haven’t talked to in a while (especially someone older)? (I mean really talked to, not just a post on Facebook.) Pick up the phone and call them. They would love to hear from you, just to know that someone is thinking of them. Ask them about a favorite Valentine memory.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to cost a fortune; you can make someone’s day in small ways. Just give it some thought.

Naperville Senior Center provides a warm, safe environment for your loved one when they can’t safely be on their own during the day. We provide them with a hot, noontime meal and the socialization to keep them from being lonely. Your loved one is truly our loved one.

Members are welcome to be as independent as they can safely be while they are with us. In fact, one of our Members drives himself to our center! He could go anywhere he wants, but due to the socialization and other cool things, he chooses to come here a few days a week. In addition to socialization, we encourage exercise, games and puzzles, singing, clapping, dancing, computer time and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.
